One thing always bugged me about all the stuff that went down earlier- Cantillon isn't even part of HORAL, I felt like it would be pretty typical for us Americans to assume Cantillon is the end-all-be-all of lambic producers. Seemed pretty typical. Glad they figured something else out with diplomatic means.
Which American colleges are producing lambic inspired beers, that's what I want to know.
Honestly, I would put more stock in JVR/Cantillon than HORAL. Not because JVR/Cantillon is all knowing or all powerful, but because HORAL has lost nearly all credibility, at least to me, by allowing Lindemans and others to label some of the crap* that they make as lambic.
* Not implying that all Lindemans is crap.
I'm kinda amused every time I see that stuff shitting up the shelves at upscale grocery stores and cheap liquor stores as the lone lambic option, broadcasting the word "LAMBIC" in big bright letters to all the normal non-beer-nerds who pass by. Great brand ambassador.
Man, the Star Trek expanded universe took some dark turns.I couldnt get past the line that included the words "high council" without lol'n

That means my Method Geuze bottles are now collectors items, right?

Shots fired.... guessing no more spontaneous collaborations between JK and DG.
I have no idea what that's trying to say.

I think they are saying Jester King charges to much.
I've never understood this argument as demonstrative of the (il)legitimacy of of HORAL. They didn't come into existence until 1997, and by that time Lindemans, Timmermans, etc were already well established as both lambic brewers and blenders as well as purveyors of sweetened lambic. The only reason lambic is still around today is because of the sweetened stuff that was peddled in the post War period. Even Cantillon sweetened until as late as 1978. Without adapting to new tastes, lambic would have died out completely. Just because Cantillon was the first brewery to stop doing it doesn't mean the rest of the breweries should have as well. There's no chance in hell that Lindemans et al. were going to change their well established labeling when HORAL came around; that'd be insanely stupid from a business standpoint. The fact that those beers sell so well has allowed them to move back toward more production of a traditional product as well. I definitely don't think HORAL is doing themselves any favors for the most part, but write them off because they didn't put a stop to old-school practices seems kind of silly. The only option they had was to set up the Oude/Vieille vs non distinction. The last three Cantillon museum newsletters have given a really great history about naming lambic.
This seems pretty clear. Basically saying Jester King is trying to leverage the heritage of Traditional Iambic producers as a capitalist tool to charge higher prices
I always thought the Cantillon HORAL spat was more about Mort Subite (Heineken) (and Similarly Bel Vue (In Bev)) versus sweetened lambic. But you’d know better than me.
You should listen to Jean on the recent Belgian Smaak podcast. He gets pretty deep into it.
