Yes, we made liege waffles, frites, and mussels with the Belgians! Some old ass Lambics were opened tonight and the only one that sucked at all was the back sweetened 1970's Belle Vue...

Just drank a Girardin 1882 Kriek for the first time in ages.

Holds up better than I thought. Not a sour/funky party but not sweet and nice and dry.

Am I correct in thinking this is pasteurized?
 
I found a shop with some Oud Beersel Geuze Vielle 750s with a best before date of 2030. I'm guessing these were bottled in 2010?

Opened one this weekend and was surprised that the funk and sourness was so subtle for a 4 year old bottle (if my assumption is correct). What is everyone's experience with these? Wondering if I should grab a couple more to hold onto a bit longer. This place had them priced at $8.99 which I thought was a lot lower than other shops for the 750.

I also see the Kriek is rated slightly higher and I think they had some of those at the same price. Anyone with tasting notes for a 4 year bottle of the Kriek Vielle?

in my experience oud beersel is not quite as funky or sour as say tilquin, 3F, cantillon or hanssens but it is a nice gueuze, at the price you are seeing it I would buy every bottle of the gueuze and kriek.

Thanks. I really love Tilquin and 3F and this was my first experience with the OB Vielle. I still really enjoyed the subtleties to it but definitely expected something different. I'll have to grab some fresher bottles to check out too.

What did you do? Did you chop up/puree the apricots before pressing?
 
What has been anyone's experience with older CDC/CSG? I don't believe I've had any bottles that have been older than 2 years, but recently acquired a 2010 as an extra in a trade.

I chopped it up into 1/4" cubes then muddled it in the bottom of my French press. After that I poured half the 375ml in and let it steep in the fridge for 15 minutes. Finally I pressed the fruit down and mixed that liquid with the remaining 1/2 in a glass. I only used half to make sure that I didn't lose all my carbonation. I probably could have puréed it as well, but it would have completely filled the French press screen with pulp. If you do purée it I would probably just mix the pulp in to the beer in a large carafe or jug and pour the apricot goozy beermosa from that.

I really enjoyed it and will definitely be doing this again.... Next time I'll probably do blackberries next since I just picked a few pints off of my bush.

It's definitely a step down but it's still really good. I like the Kriek more.
 
Are there any generalizations that can be made about aging gueuze? I've seen people say that it gets "funkier" but the lone old gueuze I've ever had (99 3F) wasn't overwhelming funky, though I wasn't able to compare it to fresh gueuze at the time.

I think you can generalize how a given blender's gueuze will age, but you can't really generalize over everything. Did you have the 2005 Cantillon Gueuze from Mikkellerbar while they had it? That would give you a good idea of what happens to Cantillon. It seems to keep getting funkier and more complex as it ages, whereas 3F (imo) peaks earlier and sort of plateaus. Hanssens seems to develop for a while too, but I've had less of that.

Interesting. I know cantillon isn't as in your face when it's fresh, so I'm curious to try some older stuff. I'll keep my eye out at mikkeller/trappist/etc. otherwise I've got a 2011 bottle that I bought fresh (self aging feels more special) that I might be able to crack in a few years.

They might still have it for all I know, I just assume it has to have had sold out by now.

Labeling question for you guys. Does Oud Beersel change their labels very often? Is this a case of different labels for different distribution? The best before dates are 21.06.2015 / 27.02.2016 / 21.06.2016 (L to R) so there is a little gap between each but it seems strange to change labels times in a year. Any info is welcomed thanks!
