What was the recipe? I've had uglier. Was 1.060ish, 2row with (i think) 5% munich. Was supposed to be Vienna but I shopped at the LHBS a bit drunk (bar next door). Was just enough Munich to make it sort of a murky brown, almost greyish color. I've never seen anything like it again. Was really unappetizing.

Ready for this?

5.5 gal - OG 1.053, FG 1.007 ~ 60 IBU.

8 lb 2-row
.5 lb Caramunich
.5 lb flaked oats
2.5 oz black patent
1 lb corn sugar
1oz centennial @ 60 - 33 ibu
1 oz centennial @ 30 - 25 ibu
1 oz citra @ flameout
1 oz mosaic @ flameout

Mashed @ 151

1 oz Citra dry hop - 5 days @ day 5
1 oz Mosaic dry hop - 3 days @ day 9

I thought the small amount of black patent would lend a nice red hue (and beersmith seemed to agree) and I don't think it did.

Interesting, I've been meaning to try that too. I made an IPA recently with beets (blended them in some water, added to runnings) and it was super blood red as I brought it up to a boil. All dropped during the boil though, regular golden hue. Noticed the change almost instantly when I added the 60min hops.

I guess I just thought that a little tiny bit of black would make more a Amber hue, but I think once it drops clear it won't be so bad.

It's been kegged a whole day so... We'll see.

Good luck! Thanks for getting me all excited about day drinking for nothing [emoji17]

Unfortunately no, but I am smoking a pork butt and chicken on Friday. On second thought, I'll need something else to do while babysitting the smoker...

I'll be working from home on most days...spending most other days in the city wandering around aimlessly, looking to spend ma money

Work is killing me, and it looks like you rowdy buttholes have been busy. 400+ posts I just skipped. Someone please get fookee wastee for me while I finish up my coffee

Carafa Special II or III is a nice malt to have on hand for color adjustments in a lot of styles where roastiness is not wanted. I'm guessing the same goes for these and black patent which I've not used.

A little goes a long way.

I think when it drops more clear its burnt sienna color will come to the fore as planned. (Amber is so passé)

I met Sigourney Weaver.

I was so close to getting my wife to agree to name our daughter Ripley. Damn you, Bing Crosby.

I heard this song and was sold on the name Leilani.
Come to think of it, @Finsfan, when you are in Kaanapali near the Whalers Village, if you opt to eat at Sweet Leilani's, cool place to eat a romantic meal right out on the beach. No stealing the name though :D
