Returned home last night and after an hour a neighbor saw my outdoor garage light was on fire. He came banging on my door, I panicked, grabbed the fire extinguisher and we put out the fire. Called 911 in the process, they confirmed it wasn't electrical and didn't reach the wiring, so I was clear to turn the power on at the house. They were impressed that we acted fast, had a working fire extinguisher, and turned off the main power. I pointed to my shed and said that 80 sq. ft. shed has 90 amps of power running to it. I learned very quickly what I needed to do if there were a fire. Unfortunately, in real time, there was a lot of hand waving, screaming "what do I do?!" and running around the house. It all worked out and I have minimal damage. Unfortunately, I am leaving on the 10th and basically won't be home for longer than about 12 hours between then and the 18th, so I'm stressing about fires. If not for my neighbor who caught it while sitting in his bedroom, I would be in way worse shape.

Selfishly I hope the funeral doesn't land on the weekend, with my testing/tournament coming up Fri/Sat and kid's Bday on Sunday... oof.

Home sick today. I know I'm working too much when being sick is exciting.

The recipe was the complete opposite of my usual BdG. I like to stick with simple, less than 3 malts. This was a ton of odds and ends that I threw in a 10 gallon batch. Brewed on my buddy's weird electric system Thanksgiving, 2014. Fermented in the 60s with 34/70, 1/2 got dregs of whatever we drank that day with the yeast, the rest stayed clean for a while. Didn't like the clean half so I transferred some of the other beer over. I think I also sampled these after sampling some other mixed ferment beers I had going to that I liked. So, overall really precise and totally repeatable.

Morning...

Rough brew day yesterday. Ended up few points lower after my struggling. If the rest goes as planned on paper, I'll end up with 4.5% instead of 5% stout. I almost think it was the perfect way to shake off the rust after coming out of the winter. Planning next beer or two now. Trying to decide what style I should try next, if there is any that I'm even interested i attempting or if I should just go for a good IPA. Probably going to do a mosaic/SMaSH while the mocha choca bullshirt roflstout is derping away in the keezer.

What was the best feature you have ever seen at a bar that would be totally unique?
For me, Maui Brewing company had a frozen strip inlay in their bar to keep the bottom of the beer cold. Up to that point I had never seen it before. I have yet to see it anywhere else for that matter. Totally unique

It's not totally unique, as I've heard of a couple other places that do it, but the Moerlein Lager House has a few tap tables in their main seating area. You don't have full access to all the drafts, but you can self-serve some of the mainstay beers and it has a counter that charges by the ounce. It might not be ideal for every situation, but say you have an after-work happy hour group and don't want to bug the staff every time you want another round, it works great in that scenario.

Other than that, I like unique settings and architecture: renovated churches, historic buildings, etc. Nondescript taprooms in industrial parks are boring.

I have been at a bar that had something similar to that setup, and it was in Shreveport, LA of all places. Very cool.

As far as totally unique... Coppertail Brewing has an actual confessional from a Catholic church. I haven't seen anyone use that yet though.

And of course, it's snow and freezing rain, making my roundabout walk that much better.

The story we got was there was as follows: There is a bell on each floor of the pub. When parliament would reconvene they would ring the bells to recall all the lords back to parliament. The building itself is awesome.

They have two floors, each with their own bar. The second floor has large glass windows were you can view the brew process. If you look up from the first floor through the open 2nd floor you can also view in. Pretty awesome
