    Wyeast 1.080 gravity

I just made 4 gallons of a beer and it came out at 1.080. I usually make a starter but forgot. Since it is only 4 gallons will one packet of Wyeast get the job done? Thanks!! :tank:

Belgian Candi Syrup vs. Cane Sugar

Does Dark Belgian Candi Syrup contribute any flavor to a beer? I was thinking about just using cane sugar and a little debittered black malt to achieve the same color and ABV% but I want to keep the flavor the same. I have used Candi Syrup D90 for a brown ale and have had great results but I...

Leaving Beer for a few days

I forgot to make a yeast starter and I started brewing. Is it a big deal to leave the beer in the carboy for a few days until my starter is ready. I am using washed yeast so I think I should probably make a starter but I could just throw the yeast in. I am only brewing 3 gallons. Thanks!!

    Maple Porter

I am trying to make a maple porter. I have tried three times. The first time I added the maple syrup at the end of the boil. The yeast ate all of the maple syrup and I was left with a really nice tasting porter but lost any maple flavor. The second and third time I tried adding 1 oz. of...

    One Year Old Yeast

I had a package of Wyeast that was exactly one year old. Manufactured in June 14th 2011. I made a one liter starter with it on Thursday morning for a 3 gallon batch I want to make. It appears OK but it does not have the dense white cake on the bottom. When I shake it the airlock does get...

    Cooler Losing Heat

Hello, I use a Coleman picnic cooler for mashing. I have drilled a hole for a themometer in the side and screwed it in. I probably made about five beers and only lost a couple degrees but now for some reason when I mash I lose 10-12 degrees over 60 min. I preheat the cooler everytime. I...

    Force Carbonation

I am force cardonating my second beer. The first one I turned the PSI to 25 and let sit for 48 hours. I backed the PSI down to 5 and it came it really good. I did this again for the second one but now I am hearing a lot of bubbling inside the keg. I have seen some things where you can shake...

    Belgian Brown Ale

I am just getting done fermenting my begian brown for ten days. I was going to add priming sugar and bottle it and let it sit for a month. I was also going to put away a case for Christmas :). I was wondering if I should rack it and let it sit in a secondary before I add the priming sugar and...

    Fuggle Hops

I have a great recipe for a Belgian Brown Ale and I add 1 oz of Fuggle at 60 minutes and then add 1/2 oz of Goldings at 20 min. This beer is really good and wonderfully malty but I am wondering if I am losing all the taste of the Fuggles by adding them so early.

    Brewing 3 Gallon Batch

I am planning on brewing a 2/3 gallon batch of beer. I usually end up with a little more with the mash and the sparge water. I currently have a five gallon carboy and a 6.5 gallon carboy. I normally primary ferment in the 6.5 gallon and then secondary in the 5 gallon when brewing 5 gallons...

    Yeast Starter

Hi, I am doing my first yeast starter. Last night I added 16 oz of water and the 1/2 cup of DME and boiled it and then cooled and added the yeast. It is good and the ring of yeast is on the bottom and the air lock is slowly going up and down. I would like to add another wort to it. I want...

    Honey or Candi Syrup

I added some honey to my brown ale in the primary 72 hours after fermentation had started and the beer went crazy. I have an overflow set up so it wasn't a big deal however I was concerned that all the honey might have just left the beer. When do you normally add honey or candi syrup?

    Yeast Over Flow

My beer is overflowing through the airlock. I watch the top and everything is just flowing right out and up through. If I add more water it just shoots the water right through. I have a 6 gallon glass carboy. Once it stops going crazy I was going to add water and let it go but I am worried...
