i don't remember seeing a thread like this one, so I thought it would be fun to find out what yall make/fabricate/create at home, that most people would just buy commercially. I'm thinking consumables and the like, things we use on a regular basis. Mine is rolling my own smokes; yes not a great habit, but I've saved a lot of money; smokes out here are about $9/pack, a bit less on the rez; I can roll an entire carton for less than $20. Machine only cost $40, tubes are about $4 for 200, and I can get good tobacco on the rez for about $13 a pound; lasts me well over three weeks.

Top of my head mostly food type items. Bread, pickles, yogurt, sausage, jerky, and other butchered items from deer, some cheese but would like to do more. Non food I make pottery so a lot of our dinnerware and other items. I’m sure there is more, I wouldn’t mind getting into reloading but have plenty of other priorities and high quality ammo is readily available for not too bad of a price.

Bread. Like my beer, it's way better than I can buy. Unlike brewing, it saves a heap of dough too (pun intended.) And thanks to the thread here on HBT I'm now making homemade PBW for brewery and household cleaning. That saves a whole lot of money. Now I wonder if there are other things it will dawn on me I do myself that "normal" people just get ready made. Used to make yogurt but that wasn't a huge advantage.

Ha! When I was a kid Lorrado (sp?) came out with a cig making kit. Mom promptly put me to work making her smokes. She died of lung cancer 13 years ago, but she was truly excessive in her consumption of tobacco and stubborn maybe incapable of stopping.

To the question at hand, I bake bread, but not to totally avoid buying commercial bread, because it tastes better and feels like a bit of an accomplishment when it looks good too, it’s also something tho utilize some spent grains. Sauerkraut. I had several crafty hobbies as a kid including candle making and bottle cutting projects (which I see is making a comeback) but dipping bottle tops is all I do with melted wax now.

Food, and sometimes I make lamps out of things I find. I was making vinegar, but it attracted too many fruit flies. I make my own workout supplements too, from pre-workout drinks/caps and protein shakes (which are only whey isolate, dextrose, and quick oats; buying dextrose that the LHBS is how I got into cider making by the way!), to capping up amino acids and other supplements.

Buying the ingredients in bulk has saved me thousands of dollars over the years, plus I sell some of the things I make to friends, so they get to save money as well. Its a trip how much this stuff costs at the store, online or in real life, and all of the ingredients that are just fillers or so under-dosed that they are useless. Bulk caffeine caps come out to about 10 cents for 200mg, which is basically a strong cup of coffee, or a can of Rockstar or Redbull. 10 cents or $3+? Don't make me think too hard! Bulksupplements.com is the bomb. I also bought 144 pounds of whey protein for $189. A "high quality" 4 pound jug of protein powder can cost up to $80, again, a pretty easy decision. When I was bodybuilding, I was running through protein powder like nobodies business, so again I saved heaps just buying in bulk and making my own mix tailored perfectly to my macro-nutrient requirements for a given meal (was eating 6 times a day and every meal was measured out for protein, carbs, and fat, and timed for when my body needed whatever amount of macros)

I also make a blend of potassium and magnesium for my daughters menstrual cramps. It kind of works sometimes. Jams when fruit is ready, usually plum and/or blackberry.

Bread, garlic, other vegetables in season, plus some frozen. Not that I make them, but I help with (and sometimes barely tolerate)wife's chickens, both laying hens and meat birds. She makes super-premium ice creams, gelatos, etc, she has commercial gear, (but no commercial kitchen right now).

Again, not that I "make it" but heat the house with wood, accounts for about 80% of total heat.

Like many of you all, I also make bread, pizza from scratch, quick breads like cakes, pancakes and waffles without a mix, and between my wife and me, cook all the meals during a normal week. We will usually treat ourselves to a meal out at a restaurant once a week. When we have friends over it's usually my beer and my pizza. Though last night for New Year's I made a vegetarian chilli and corn bread because some of my friends are vegetarians.

rolling my own smokes
I was packing them for my mother for some months to help her out. Don't smoke, myself, but I was getting pretty good at it, turning out some nicely packed cigs.
Funnily, when people found out I was doing this, they wanted to start buying cigarettes off of me and paying a fair price--still cheaper than store bought for them and maybe less chemicals? I had to beat them back with a stick. What an easy business it would be to get into. Conscience-wise, I had to refuse.

I also grow cannabis. The stuff sold commercially isn't very good and way overpriced. I make all kinds of different edibles with it. Cheers

full sun or indoor? not sure where you're located....i remember back in mendo, the full sun plants got HUGE.

Indoor hydroponic. Our climate is tough to grow outdoor. It's always miserable weather at the end of flower resulting in plenty of mold. Also I'm canadian therefore 100% legal. Cheers

that's why i support legalizing it here, to see how long it would take people to get fed up with high prices... :mug:

For me it’s brewing beer, growing hops and mandarins. Getting into homemade pizza. Hope to get into smoking meats this year.

My kids make silk Christmas decorations for the house and to sell.

Kids also make abstract art paintings and do photography.

Wife makes the meals and home schools one of our kids.
She taught preschool out of our house for 6 years so all kinds of crafts and artwork has been made in our house over the years.

Between brewdays I cook a lot and cure bacon, make sausage, smoke BBQ, bake bread, pizza, cakes, cookies.

I'm in B.C which is arguably always been the king of Canadian cannabis. We can buy top grade black market stuff for 120 a oz. That same stuff from the BC cannabis store is about 3x the price. Prices are dropping in the legal market but it's gonna take a long time. Cannabis laws have never really been inforced here and therefore the black market is huge, very good and inexpensive. For about 5 years prior to legalization we had over 100 storefronts in Vancouver selling black market cannabis right in the open. You could openly smoke a joint in front of the police and they wouldn't even bat a eye. It's only a matter of time now. The reefer madness generation don't want to admit they were fooled by there government and the new generation that have acess to the true information know reefer madness was completed b.s. Once the old timer's pass things will change. Hopefully sooner. Cheers

P.s sorry to get of track

Maybe BC bud isn't so great after all. I don't think we've ever had anything like that happen in my lifetime here or at least it's never been reported. There have been a few cases of people eating edibles for the first time getting pretty stoned and going to the hospital to nap it off though. That may have been some of the most potent cannabis ever. Cheers

it could have been the meth he was on too....everyone tells me i should be angry drinking as much as i do....but as long as i'm drinking homebrew and my ass doesn't hurt i'm a happy camper..... :D

edit: and to keep this on topic, i have a wondermill and make my own bean flour too...

Aside from beer, cider and mead...
I don't smoke (anything...) so I can't talk about the rolling cigs thing, though I used to know a guy who did roll his own. Occasionally I think he may have mixed certain other substances in with the tobacco...
I do make bread, pickled onions and kimchi, among other things.
I grow hops, tomatoes, peppers and whatever else SWMBO asks for in the garden.
I'm reasonably handy around the house and my shop.
I also make plenty of noise with my collection of guitars and other musical instruments.

I’m a semi-pro carpenter/cabinetmaker (farming is seasonal; I need a side gig), reload ammo, make sausage, jerky, etc. My wife is an excellent baker, especially breads and pies. She’s also an avid quilter. Anybody we’re distantly related to or well acquainted with gets a quilted item whenever they have a new child, grandchild, move into a new house, or just come to her attention.

Homebrewing is really a cheap hobby compared to quilting. Just sayin’...

Well, we raise dairy goats and as such have out own milk supply. Out of that we make our own cheese, yogurt, kefir, fudge, soap, and occasionally cajeta. On top of that, excess buck kids frequently end up in the freezer. We have raised pigs, chickens, and turkeys in the past. I can't remember the last time we bought bread from the store. My wife also spins fiber into yarn, so we have knitted gloves, mittens, hats, scarves, etc.

Making bread sounds like a wonderful venture. I really don't need to be eating a lot of bread though.

I make all my own beans from dry. Way cheaper and better than buying them in the can. I also like to grow my own peppers (jalapeños, habaneros, etc.) in the summer months. They're way hotter than what you buy in the stores and you get sh!tloads of them too (in good years).
My stepdad roasts all of his own coffee, which is badass. It's tasty too. He makes them in 7oz batches a couple times a week. Takes 15 minutes.

I actually don't make it per se, but I identify and harvest and eat weeds that grow in my yard. Mushrooms when they grow are almost instantly found id'ed and eaten. I seem to be growing puffballs rather regularly if not often enough.
Weeds like dandelion, wild onion, lemony sorrel, curly dock, wild fennel, plantano, dichondra, etc etc are all regular features of my diet.

Cool.

Good post.

Mostly around food - I grow it- fruits and vegetables, seed saving. We make 90% of our food from scratch, food prepping each week so we don't buy convenience crap. Sourdough bread, kombucha, lots of sauces, etc. Some woodworking.

Heat with wood for most of the winter from wood on our property, I'd consider that something most people buy commercially.

Beer, fruit wines, mead, cider. Bread. Jams- blueberry, strawberry, blackberry. But probably my maple syrup is the unusual one. I tap about 20 trees and boil down enough sap to make about 1 gallon of syrup. Give most of it away. And now I know why syrup is so expensive to buy......

There's a lot of commercial maple sugaring in this area, and most of the producers now use RO filters to initially remove a good bit of water, to reduce fuel costs in boiling it the rest of the way down. It's still mighty expensive. And I always had a romantic idea of the lengthy boiling process as a sort of social event. Very cool that you make it.

We grow and can/freeze vegetables. We're in a new house so, I'm in the process of replanting an orchard. My wife regularly bakes cakes and pastry and is getting in to breads. We purchase whole animals from local farms and process the animals, not necessarily growing/producing my own but a bit different then standard commercially available. We also grow our own culinary mushrooms (oysters, shitake, and lion's mane).

I crochet hats, scarves, mittens, blankets, and toys. I make my own frames and matte for pictures.

I've built computers in the past, but I don't have time for that anymore. You can't drink a computer so beer won out.

For me, it's really brewing and reloading ammo with an occasional foray into jerky making, when I feel ambitious.

Brewing has really taken over for me though. I actually just sold a lot of my reloading equipment but kept the bare minimum, just in case.

I build my own speakers and do some other random woodworking like tables and shelves. My wife and I also have been doing our own pizza and pasta from scratch (dough and sauce). It's not something that I make but I also cut my own hair (not just a buzz cut) for the last 4 years and no one has been able to tell.

I pick mushrooms in the forest (edible kind not the psychedelic kind). I cook almost everything from "scratch" from pancakes to BBQ sauce to macaroni and cheese to pizza etc.

My wife is very crafty with paper crafts, sewing, photography etc. She also makes sour dough bread.

I think a lot of it comes from. The fact I live in a foreign country (different than the one I grew up in) and many of the things I enjoy back home are not available here. So necessity is the mother of invention.

I'm looking to getting into yogurt making and kefir. My daughter consumes a lot of that stuff. Any tips?

Lastly, I also made my own brewing calculator/recipe builder.

Brewing, Kombucha, and other fermentation consumables are always going at my house. Kombucha is an easy one that doesn't take much equipment or money.

Ooooo audioporn …. yeaaaayyyyy.
That a phillips/Marantz soft dome in those in wall ones ? I have a few of those in various speakers, and a smaller version was in a few other brands made by onkyo and weirdly one branded RCA.

Cool.
