So Cuvee Rene is a shelf turd around here. There's gotta be some older ones lying about. How do I interpret their bottling dates? The internets give me a bunch of different answers none of which inspire any confidence.

Just grabbed a bottle of Cuvee Rene. Not expecting it's very old. It's from a bottle shop with pretty big turnover, but I would like to know what the bottling date codes mean if possible. Internet tells me nothing. It's one of those whacky codes... LA22NGC?

This is all I could find on it

L = Lindemans
A = 1 = January
22 = 22
N = 14 = 2014
GC = Gueuze Cuvee?

Thanks! I thought it might be something like that. Not all European code systems are that straightforward though.
I need to keep my eye out for older bottles. There's bound to be some dusty ones in the area. Interested to give this one a shot though. Haven't had it in years.

Personally not a fan of cuvée Renee. But it could have just been piss poor condition at the shop itself

Finally opened Armand 4 set and I have to say those were the best 3F gueuzes I have had. better than GB, Blauw, and Oude Geuze. Haven't had any OGV but I have trouble imagining they beat it. I hope the newer 3F geuze starts to taste more like this as Armad adds in his own lambic.

My order of preference was
herfst, zomer, lenter, winter

Herfst was definitely the dark horse after it was all said and done but it is really starting to shine.

After a tasting back in March where we opened Blauw, Framboos, Malvasia Rosso, B1 Hommage, Cantillon Brabantiae, Blabaer, Crianza, B1 and B2 50N4E, as well as some other limited release or 1 off lambics we decided that going after one offs was not really worth it unless you were getting them at retail/release. but the armand 4 set was better than any of the gueuzes we had that night in March. and as for fruited Hommage was the best we had and thats Why I tracked down 2 bottles when it hit the U.S.

Has anyone else noticed the prices on belgiuminabox jump by like 100%? 2013 cantillon kriek and rose are like 24-25 euro. that is just outrageous. Kurt has great pricing on the volume deals but come on man that's like $40 for cantillon kriek and rose which are about $20 when they are in the U.S. I know the supply and demand argument, but people do not buy them even if they switch back in forth between in stock and out of stock my guess is no one buys them at that price though.

I still personally think Blauw is better than the Armand 4' set, but they are amazing gueuze. I put the Armand's on OGV '02 level which is right below Blauw for me. A&T is on that level too.

Does anyone have any insight as to what is especially different about A&T compared to regular OG or even OGV? I imagine it is subjectively better, but what about it is so pleasing to the palate?

I wouldn't say that it's subjectively better than OGV. It's close, not necessarily better.
Tomme helped blend it. Duh. ;)
"helped"

I had A&T and GB within a month of each other, and I found that the A&T had a more vibrant and lemon-like vibe to the gueuze, and particularly more funky on the nose. Whereas the GB was a bit more dryer and oaky, which I'm assuming is coming from the 4-year lambic addition. Both are still drinking awesome, but I'd prefer A&T.

A&T (According to Ratebeer) is a blend of 4+ year old Boon and Armand's lambic from 2008. I would have to look at my review for a more succinct answer, but generally put, it tastes like a 3F on steroids. Tons of funk, cobweb, and musty goodness throughout with lemon and grapefruit playing off oak tannin. It is highly effervescent and very lively in the glass. It surpasses most other 3F geuze I've had, although I have not had a ton other than golden blend, regular 3F, and several different OGVs.

EDIT: I also don't think it is subjectively "better" than most of the OGV I've had, I do remember it being more vibrant than most though. Unique and different, but a good OGV is probably dead even with A&T.

I have noticed that for some "vintages", however the 2014 kriek is a normal $20. Not sure if Kurt's pricing has always been that way for beers other than the current year's vintage.

They have always been higher but not 10 euros higher for 1 year older. I bought 750s of 2005 cantillon kriek from etre last year for 17.5 euro each
