Kombucha mold?

This dark looking stuff is imbedded in the scoby, is not furry, and smells normal. Side view looks normal. However, the dark area was dry when I initially touched it and I’ve never encountered anything that LOOKED like this. Is it mold?

P.S. I started growing this scoby from scratch using store bought kombucha a few months ago. I haven’t actually tasted any booch produced by this scoby...was waiting for it to get bigger.

Normal SCOBY. It's dark from being oxidized.
