Edit: I'll never leave this place willingly. I was perm banned at one point but thankfully @Yooper resurrected me. I know full well which side my bread is buttered on. HBT has been my home for a long while, and I'm looking forward to getting back to contributing to brewing topics real soon. I can't say enough about how much this community has meant to me, or how much it's given me. Smooches.

It went really well! Both the head brewer and his assistant started out in homebrewing, so they were really receptive. I was anxious about being able to recall so many details since I haven't brewed in a while, but luckily once we started talking it all came back pretty easily. At one point they introduced me to another employee, referring to me as "huge into homebrewing" which felt really good to hear. We talked a lot about process, base malts, intricacies of recipe design, water building, etc. He mentioned that they use Brewer's Friend to build their water and calculate pH adjustments, which started a pretty granular discussion on chemistry. They were also intrigued that I started out in all-grain brewing, and have been creating my own recipes since the beginning. I'll bring along some of my beer to the next meeting, they were definitely interested in my Rhinestone Carboy stout.

Great guys, and the assistant brewer will be moving on soon to take over as head brewer at another local brewery, so there will be an opening. I hope I came across as knowledgeable enough that I wouldn't take long to train. I know the pay will be quite different from my past career, but I'm hoping to continue consulting on the side to help make up the difference.

Assistant brewer pays a fraction of what I'm used to, but my consultancy work is picking up and I've been in talks with a former competitor who wants to formally retain my services. I've spent the past two decades chained to a desk, it would be a huge improvement to balance computer work with the physical nature of commercial brewing. Not to mention the aromatherapy!

My second interview went extremely well, we really got down into the details. Yes, I'm mechanically inclined. No, I don't like the pet shop boys. In fact, we like the same music and movies; and yes, I will happily hoist 150lb kegs all day long. He said I'm the only compelling candidate without prior experience, and I'm hoping with all my might that they take a chance on me. I should hear back early this week.

I'm a Buckley fan, not sure how to put this but his whole sound foreshadows an early death, especially Hallelujah. It's almost like he knew.

I'm not religious, but if Jesus came back, would we even recognize him?

I was out behind the house tonight looking up into the live oaks behind my house. Full of spanish moss. That stuff hangs off all the old trees down here. It drops long tentacles that release spores that float up into the trees, gets stuck in the bark, and a new bunch is born.

Believe it or not, in the 1930's it was harvested and used to stuff car upholstery.

Still waiting for a decision. I get it that I'm a wild card, but I don't know how to convey why I need to leave my former profession behind me, no matter the cost. If I took my clothes off for money, and wanted to get away to honest work, it would be simple. That's how I feel. Spanish Moss is an epiphyte, meaning it grows on trees for support but gets its nutrients from air and rain, not from the tree itself, so it does not harm the host tree by taking nutrients from it. Thus that symbiotic relationship would be classified as "Commensalism"...

First time I saw Spanish Moss I was in my early teens visiting my older sister in FL. As a plant & science enthusiast, I took some back north in my folks' car. Tried to keep it alive in the warmest & lightest place in house draped on some house plants, regulary misting it, but it did not live long. Happy to report I didn't get chiggers.

I didn't get the assistant brewer position. They went with someone with brewery experience, of course. I'd have made the same choice, it's a small brewery with only the two brewers, not really room on board for a trainee. Ah well.

In other news, my freelance consulting work is picking up; I just landed a new client, a relationship I've been cultivating since April. Designing in a category I'm passionate about. Also got my first callback on a LinkedIn application, just 12 hors after submitting my stuff they reached out to set up an intro call. Not keen on the idea of moving to MA, but it's a good company to work for and I have a lot to offer them.

Still feel bummed about missing a shot at becoming a real brewer. Bucket list for sure.

Bummer you didn't get the AB position, but maybe they know of another brewery in the area that is looking as well? Or maybe if they give you the opportunity to beer tend a couple hours a week, you can get your foot in the door at least and prove your worth if that is the path you really want to go down? Food..or drink for thought.

Maybe. Maybe not.

People are purpose-built. They might not know the purpose in the beginning, but if they listen to those around them, and the ACCEPT THE LESSONS LIFE HAS SHOWN THEM, they will understand their place. I say it this way, because often people think they are one thing, but they are not. It takes disinterested opinions from some source to show them.

Anyway, hope is going well with you all. JJ, I do wish you well. Man, I'm a fan of yours. always. Buck up, when there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by.

Umm, yeah, this for me too. I am not on here as much since then, but @Yooper definitely had my back when I was a bit tipsy and opinionated.
