GFI Tripped now SSR does not work

Today I did a test run on my new E Kettle. Water only. Had water up to my strike temp that will be used on my first batch when the GFI tripped. Found problem to be a leak on my element gasket which in turn filled up the junction box on the end of the element. It tripped twice before I found the leak. Now my SSR doesn't work. I have the 8v DC signal but no power through the relay. Would that take out the relay? I don't feel it would but first time working with SSR's.

Well it certainly sounds like you cooked the SSR. Do you keep a spare on hand?

That I don't but I just ordered 2 of them. I'll have a spare now.

I'm believing that now. Never worked with them and I've been an electrician for 40 years. I'll be real nice to them from now on.

Solid state components tend to be very sensitive to over voltage or over current conditions. It doesn't take much of a transient to cook them, and if you had water shorting your mains directly to ground, and hit it twice that probably did the trick

I think you are right on with that. I did some reading on the website for the PID controller and that's what they say. Made changes to the termination box that I have mounted to the element so if it leaks will not get into the box. Thank God they only cost a few dollars.

No worries. Perhaps drill a couple of tell tale holes on the bottom of the box so if you get another leak you'll see it sooner.
