I finally got the nerve to enter my first competition my belgian blonde which is only pilsner malt sugar and wlp 570. I love belgian beer drink it all the time and I thought I nailed it this time. So I decided to enter it in a local non BJCP contest in a belgian/saison category judged by three judges who All but one gave it good coments

First judge crystal clean but no head retention, nice belgian yeast character well done finish dry

Second good head retention (huh) taste pear and apple acedaldehide (huh) aroma Diacetyl

Third taste estery, body light with high carbination finish has some bready flavors

All but first gave me good scores. I am a little disappointed but I really dont think the judges understand the style, by the way the beer that one the category was a hepavison how does a german wheat beer win a belgian category

I have entered a couple comps and both have been decent scores since I make what I like and not so much to style. Last one I sent in a lager and got one low score and two really good scores, so like you, I was little confused at the range of scores and comments. If you like what you are brewing, that is what really matters.:tank:

Yeah...

The same people who post long winded, 2000 word reviews on ratebeer.

I love judges.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are amazing judges. I just love how none of them have the same response to a beer. Most are guessing, based on common knowledge. Like weathermen, or fantasy "experts". Lol!

Everyone tastes differently. That's why food critics and wine critics are bull. Same with beer critics.

But it does make fantastic press when bmc wins...

Beer judges are people with individual palates, they aren't robots taking data from sophisticated test equipment. Some will like your beer, some won't. Bottom line, brew what you like, share it with those that agree and the rest are just wrong ;)

I just had a Thi Style White IPA brewed by a local brewery. I'm sure someone liked it but half of mine went down the drain. And I rearly dump a beer. (I still have 4 if anyone wants em).

Congrats on giving it a go. It does become a head scratcher when opinions are widely varied. No head retention and good? Perhaps the steward touched the inside of the cup with oily fingers. Anyway, my impression is that most judges are volunteering their time, and some are new. It's all feedback.
