Drunk and reflecting.

I work at a Toyota dealership...weve been busy lately imagine that.

I know I am a real homebrewer after a full year of doing it. I am working on cars thinking about malt...types of malt...what types of malt i should buy in bulk....how i will grow hops, and what equipment i need to build a huge rig to keep up with my friends demand for my homebrew. how will i have a keezer and a fridge to ferment beer in and not piss off my fiancee, and were moving into a house where it has been agreed the basement and backyard and garage is all mine, i know, im lucky.

i have created a market among friends, and it is rediculous.

but the overwhelming thought i have is that i am thinking about barley that is wet and allowed to sprout then heated in an oven...is this irrational?

i dont know why, i just want to mash grains. all the time. i love it. i love drinking my beer, but i just want to make beer all the time. im at work, doing recalls, and i want to be making yeast starters and mashing grains.

it was my fiancees idea to get me my beer making "kit". i know by next year she will regret it. it truly is an obsession.

I'm on my 3rd 12 oz bottle of mead for the evening, er, morning...it's after 1AM now and I have to get up at 6 AM for work...

Thinking about brewing while wrenching keeps you sane. I listen to brewing podcasts while I wrench all day. it mellows me a bit so I dont bend my prybar on my writers head when he tosses me 4 waiters just before I try to grab lunch.

Brewing has interrupted my wrenching. My 69 Mustang is going nowhere while I improve my brewing. This weekend though is the turning point. I am going to try to repair the rest of the left floorboard AND maybe the right side as well. That frame rail is probably going to have to be repaired too though. And then there is that New Holland Golden Cap Saison Clone I was hoping to get in the fermenter soon...

Despite what anyone else may think when I tell them i am a homebrewer, I don't do it just to make beer. Beer is just a great end result of a very enjoyable hobby. Like you, I enjoy thinking about the next brew day. I like to dream of buying the latest shiny brewing toy I just saw. I like jiggling recipes and making tweaks.

If I get drunk it is usually by accident, not because I have an insatiable thirst for alcohol. Getting drunk is an occupational hazard, but not a bad one. It's not like losing a hand or anything.

In short, for me at least, Homebrewing is about brewing. Drinking is about drinking. Those of us that love both are luckier than a priest in an orphanage.

One of the cool things about the brewing hobby is that you never run out of projects. I've DIY'd tube stereo gear and done some woodworking but at some point, you run out of things to build. How many flippin' model airplanes can you have, right?

But with beer you brew it then drink it then brew some more and drink some more. I guess it would be similar to building model airplanes for aerial demolition derbies.

Amen! (pun intended). I too love thinking about the next brewin' thing I have planned. Whether it's a DIY project, tweeking a recipe, or the ever pressing build a home bar, I relax everytime I think about brewing. It is a hard thought process to describe to those outside of the hobby. One can only understand by engaging themselve in the act of doing.

I'm drinking and wondering when the parts to fix my '09 Prius are going to become available. Come on, how hard is it to saw my gas pedal in half and buy me a new floor mat.

I enjoy making beer a lot. But I don't drink a lot. It might take me 2 or 3 months to get through a 5 gallon batch.

I just posted on my facebook to my friends that if they will cover the costs of their bottles and their % of ingredients, then I'll make their beer, mead, cider, etc. I'm pretty sure I'll have at least 5 takers.

And it will enable me to make a hell of a lot more beer than I have been making while just brewing for me, SWMBO, and the odd party or two.

And I hope my father-in-law's buddy running for County Sheriff this year doesn't bust me (father-in-law is also a cop).

The new gas pedals actually have about an inch standoff added to the bottom. I haven't check it out (speed-wise), but it looks more like a governer.

I'm not too worried about it. I was in for my service about two months ago and the fix wasn't in yet. I'll ask again at the next oil change.

I've figured out neutral and the power button. I'm not too worried about it.

Certainly understandable, albeit among equally obsessed homebrewers. This makes perfect sense to me. I've had many "obsessions" come and go in my life. The only one (aside from my family) that has stuck and even grown is homebrewing. Damn I wish I could do this for a living.

Yeah, brewing has interrupted my wenching as well, but sometimes you've just got to stick to your priorities.

There's an old saying that sums it up pretty well:

An Irishman will fight his way through a room full of naked women to get to a bottle of whiskey, secure in the knowledge that the women will still be there when the whiskey is gone.

(You may substitute beer for whiskey if you are so inclined)
