Morning all you former alchies!

Didn't feel very good all night and slept horrible, so I strayed home from work.

Mashing in some steel cut oats for breakfast. Then I'm going to take a 3 hour nap and feel better, at least that's the plan. View attachment 332894

I remember watching my (then about 4 year old) niece stick her fingers in her mother's glass of one of my homebrews while her mother wasn't looking during one of the holidays a few years ago. Her face when she tasted it was priceless (I know it was dark, I think it was the last time I made a Black IPA). Haven't seen her try and sneak a taste of a beer since.

I don't understand people's infatuation with this guy. Is it the accent?

I liked the goofy little touches in his first video (the skull sweater, the "boom" at each hop addition, the random cut to death metal during the boil). He seems like a good guy.

But yeah, that accent too.

I do this with any number of sauces/pastes. Kid hollering at me to sample them. It's the colors, bright reds greens yellows. Wasabi was not asked for a second time.

Beer unfortunately is a favorite of my 1 yr old. The 3 yr old spat it back in my face following the same experiment. (I'm taking foam on fingers, not 4oz sample glasses of the stuff)

Wasabi recipe? Or are you able to find/afford the good stuff? I'm tired of "horseradish with green food coloring" which is what it seems all the wasabi I ever get is.

I've wondered before if this will happen when I have kids.

When my little sister was in 3rd grade, she told her teacher once "my daddy drinks beer every day." Which was mostly accurate, he'd drink one Old Milwaukee Light with dinner most nights, but my mom still got a panicked phone call from the teacher, asking if everything was ok at home.

Plenty of stories along that line. Kids "making beer" in class and the like. I remember JZ saying on one of the BN shows that his daughter told her teacher "my daddy likes beer" or something and getting a similar phone call. If we ever have kids, i expect it to happen at least once.

The perception has changed enough since I was little, I wouldn't be surprised if the call now was more along the lines of: "little Bobby says you make your own beer...are you willing to share?" ;)

My kid sniffs the airlocks and always asks if she can help with my "beer'd."

Usually people think she's talking about my beard, so it's all good.

"Daddy makes beer'd! He's always having a beer'd!"

"Yes, daddy has a beard... you're soooo smart."

Well, boss just went home sick. Guess my plan for a productive day just took a hard left.

My kid always asks if I'm drinking coffee or whriskey
She's also constantly trying to clink glasses with me and says cheers. She's going to make an excellent drinking buddy when she's of age.

Ha... Mine loves to 'cheers' as well. I'm already worried about her.

When we give her medicine or try to get her to finish her milk, the wife and I chant "Chug! Chug! Chug!" And she downs it as fast as she can.

Probably not the best habit to get started.

If tax fraud weren't such a serious crime, I'd say roll with it :ban:

That would trigger an audit in a heartbeat. I would pass with flying colors as I don't even claim student loan interest, but I don't want the headache. I want the correct W2. Payroll was given my W2 and my final paycheck of 2015 as evidence of an issue. They responded with "not sure what the issue is here." lol

French press while on my second of 7 conference calls today. Kid is home from school too so this is going to be a long day I think :(

@Hello - wow, so you work for $3.85/hour? And I though Wal-Mart was bad! :D

I sure do!
ha

Anyone going to NHC? Heard it's expensive but would definitely like to see what it is about.

Plan is to go, but I forget when tickets go on sale.

When it's only 45 mins away? Absofrigginglutely.

Planning on it. It's generally not cheap, but travel and hotel expenses make up the bulk of the cost. Actual conference isn't that expensive.

Awesome. I have some hotel points burning a hole in my pocket. I think the website says tickets go on sale in March. Does it sell out fast?

Making plans for the week as to deter myself from going out and drinking every night. Going to grill out tonight and have my little brother coming over to eat with us. Little bonus being a vet tech, he's going to help cut the puppies nails and whatnot. No beers this week. That's the plan. Whether or not it happens... well, we'll see.

@1977brewer - PM me your address if want to try some Brrrffalo stuff.

Not bottling... I've read that you don't get much smoke character until you start getting up around 20%, but it does seem like quite a bit.

I want more of a subtle smokiness, but I love the smoke flavor, so if it was a little strong, probably not a deal breaker. I'll keg it, but if it's too harsh I could just bottle them off the keg for conditioning or set that keg aside for awhile.

Havent bothered reading the last few days of posts, so Im not sure if you decided on a grain bill, but I think that looks good. FWIW, 30% rauch/smoked malt seems like a pretty decent starting point for a subtle, but definitely present, smoke character. It also depends on how fresh the smoked malt is and the exact type. It will fade with time, so I'd err on the heavier side. For how strong it smells, it doesnt seem smoked malt can take over a beer like if you used something like +20% caramel or roasted malts

Yeah, we'll see.

Also... Boss asked me last week if I wanted a slot car track because his kids have grown out of it. Of course I said yes (daughter would love it).

Comes in with this monster, lol. Fookin score.

I can't wait to get it put together and do some drunken hot laps.

I'm powering through coffees today and they are having no appreciable impact on my complete disinterest in being productive today. I'm just really not feeling it. At all.

On the plus side, I got the o-kay from SWMBO to order some stuff I want for brewing (grain mill etc), so at least I've got that going for me.

When will it be setup so I can come race you? :ban:

I'd assume they're going to lottery it as in years past. They keep upping the capacity, and everyone who's wanted to go has been able to go. I'm hoping to couch surf and will definitely be driving so I'll hopefully be paying just for the conference. Because hotel cost is going to be substantially more than the conference. What folks I know have done, once they find out which hotel is, if they have a corporate rate that's cheaper they'll book at that rate. In Philly I split a room that way, and we saved ~10% off of the conference group rate.
