It certainly does. I grew up inner city, so a view like that was otherworldly for me. Seriously like a screen saver lol

My freshman year of college, I took a new friend from my architecture studio out to where I grew up. He was born and raised in NYC. We went out to the cabin my grandfather and I built in the woods, a couple cases of Yuengling in hand. Once he was done bitching about trudging half a mile through a foot of snow in the field to the cabin, he nearly lost his **** when he looked up. Apparently it was the first time being under such open sky, which is really hard to comprehend. Dude just stood there with his mouth open.

Sorry. One of those days. I'm done.

The AFPFFWD 20,000th Post Pool brought to you in part by Beermeduffman

Every entrant offers up one beer (bottle or can), to be shipped to the person who happens to post to this thread for the 20,000th time. You do not need to disclose what you are sending ahead of time.

Feel free to send more if you so desire.

If you would like to participate, quote this post and I'll add your name to the list.

Must participate to win.

For the sake of fairness, try not to spam to 20,000 once we get close. That ain't right. Any poster that posts more than 3 times in a row in the hunt for 20,000 will be DQ'd (this will be discussed amongst the friendly friends to determine if an infraction has occurred).

I'll keep track of the list.

1. Psylocide
2. TheCADJockey
3. 1977Brewer
4. BeerMeDuffman

(any other thoughts on this are welcome)

Let's do it!

I think that should go out the window... all it does is encourage a bunch of stupid spam.

Now... when you say stupid spam, do you mean like people just dropping one word posts when it gets close to try and win the pot?

daily-morning-awesomeness-35-photos-15.gif

Only 2453 more posts needed to hit that 20k mark. Dunno if it can be done in time for the month milestone, though

That's just the kind of attitude we DON'T need around here if we're going to get this done!

What about blow-ins from elsewhere. Say someone joins up and finds the Friendly place and posts or someone who is not friendly as evident by their posts elsewhere (I can think of 2 only 1 of whom has posted in the thread before but has been a dick to another friendly friend).

I know the odds are low but perhaps there should be a group empannelled to discuss late entrants responding to Psylo's comp (in proud association with @beermeduffman ).

1 suggestion. Put a time limit on entrance (Thursday 11.59pm) otherwise as 20k approaches one could enter the thread/the comp and take the winnings by quoting Pslyo.

Also a douchenozzle threshold (Ω). If you fall below this bar, determined by the empanneled subgroup of Friendly friends, OUT. Can there be an exception to the douchenozzle aceptance criteria for me. I'd like to enter.

The winner (w) is is to be selected from subgroup F' of Friendly friends F
F' ∈ F

The winner is an element of F' with a post P to this thread T such that P ≥ 20,000

Winner's Douchyness D ≤ Ω

TL,DR

w ∈ F' ∈ F
P ≥ 20,000
D ≤ Ω

I'm in if you'll have me

Sounds like my parent's house. They live on a flat stretch of land in the middle of nowhere (90 minutes east of Cincinnati.) You can see the milky way on clear nights.

It was a brilliant dark yellow last night and very bright. I love our backyard, modest as it is, but in the middle of the city.. having even the slightest raised deck means a nice wide open view of the sky. It almost reminds me of home. The moon rises directly over the most open line of sight we have. Really looking forward to my first spring/summer at this home for evening drinking and sky-watching.

Total cloud cover last night. I always like seeing the pics from your deck. Looks like a great place to chill. The darker place you usually post beer pics from is probably less buffeted by the wind. I'm thinking that may have some practical advantages. All we see of that is the beer, labels on the desk and dark mood in the air. :DAlso a great place to hang.

A lot of long words there, we are not but humble brewers....

This is a pretty small circle of friendly friends, with our own little corner of the internet. I don't think we get a lot of people randomly walking in on us, but in theory it could happen. So long as they are on the list before, I would say 19500 posts, that would be the threshold. That still leaves plenty of time between now and then I think.

I've been a bunch of places, but honestly the best sky watching I ever had the chance to do was when we were married in Maui. We did a sunrise tour to the top of Mount Haleakala, a dormant volcano. The sky was so clear with the cloud cover actually below the summit where we were. It was an awe inspiring event man. Check out some pictures of it sometime, it might give you incentive to go one day.

Lived there for 7th/8th grade. Haleakala, when clear, able to see across the caldera was awe inspiring. Never had the chance to hike down to the cinder cones. Hard to believe, when look down into it, that Lake Tahoe would almost fit.

lol aye, that was my first time experiencing a clear sky while out in 29 Palms CA. I just sat there all night watching the sky. I didn't think that kind of view was real outside of movies.

When the sun was rising, you could see the shadow of the mountain form over the valley, extending all the way out to the sea. It was truly an awesome experience.

Today's a fun day. Snow, freezing rain, then rain, then back to snow.

Whole city's going to be a skating rink. With my ankle, I'm glad I remembered to bring my slip-on boot spike grippers. These things:

You would be surprised on the amount of criminals who aren't used to self defense. When in rome, throat punch and eye gouge. Stick to well lit areas with crowds.

Going during the Olympics?

Nah, going out at the end of March for a part work, part fun trip. Won't really have a chance to get outside the city though.

being under such open sky, which is really hard to comprehend.

I know the feeling. I grew up in a mountain town of 800 people at an elevation of about 8,000 feet. Not much light pollution or atmosphere to get in the way of stargazing. I thought I would end up working for NASA, I loved it so much. I didn't really like mechanical engineering or physics though. :/Anyway, I miss it. Most people really don't understand how much they are missing, even in small cities.

One word posts are fine once we get into the race.

I just don't want any of this...

I win!!!1!1

Yes. (Gifs are not spam.)

Living in the city, particularly huge USA, lit-up-like-Christmas-trees-cities, you really miss out on the majesty of the night sky.

Desert camping if fortunate enough to get the chance with its dry air is incredible at night.

Also a great place to hang.

I'm not sure if it is great, it's just comfortable since it has been the go to bachelor pad for so many years. The constant smoke in a 14x20 room can get rough though. The deck is nice. The new house just doesn't really feel like home yet, and I'm not sure it ever will. Debating building a bar on the deck or something. Really need some projects to work on come spring.

Painfully reminiscent lately. Might be having a mid-life crisis pre-mid-life. Unsure.

Anyone here ever check out /r/homebrewing?

I saw some new member mention it yesterday along with a link. I didn't dare look, as I assumed it was horrible.

I thought I would end up working for NASA, I loved it so much. I didn't really like mechanical engineering or physics though.

Never thought I'd end up doing what I am doing... I hate mechanical engineering. Yet. Here I am. Physics was cool in college, but it was definitely the professor I had. Completely bombed the first two tests. He made me stay after class and he worked out every single problem with me until I got it. Absolutely fell in love with physics after that.

I hate when HBT giveaways are open for like 2 weeks allowing all types of fools to get in

Is the comp limited to continental US only?

You know all those douchenozzles that fill up beer advocate? /r/homebrewing is where they congregate and share their instagram *********gery with eachother, simultaneously circle-jerking over obscure bull**** while giving eachother rusty trombones.

So... are you saying the cut-off is too late? I don't foresee a million people entering, we aren't advertising outside of this thread.

Also, yes... shipping/customs would kill the fun. Sorry @Rhetorik

Man that might be a fun competition. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. To enter or not to enter.
