I am attempting to do my fisrt yeast haverst and after washing in the primary I dumped the slurry into a smaller jar and noticed that the yeast has settled on the bottom of the jar, underneath the trub.

What does this mean? Is the yeast still good? How do I go about retreiving the yeast without getting a bunch of trub?

Should I keep the yeast or just dump it?

Any advice?

Thanks!

Don't Dump it!
Instead, look up 'Woodlandrew' He has a blog which often has some very interesting info In this case, you have as much yeast in the "trub" layer as in the "pure yeast" layer. So, unless you plan on freezing it, don't dump the trub. What I do now, is this: after transferring, I add 1qt. of boiled then cooled water for each quart I plan on saving, plus 1 extra qt. Swirl to mix then pour into sterilized qt. jars. I let it sit overnight in the fridge, then decant the water on top and add more boiled and cooled water(reason for this is to decrease the bacterial #s). Back in the fridge until needed. Works well.

Ok I won't dump it but I'm gonna rinse it again to see if that makes a difference.

In the future I recommend you do what I do; after you pitch your starter, reserve a little slurrey and pour it into a couple sanitized preform tubes. Let it settle out, pour off the starter beer and top off with more slurrey. Repeat until slurrey is gone. I usually end up wuith 1/2-2/3 preform of compacted yeast. Tag with the starter date and strain, pop in the frige until you're ready to pitch to your next starter. No trub need apply, that's pure yeast. Yippie cayay partner, you're ranchin' now!!!

I rinsed it again last night then put it in the fridge. This morning I checked it and there is no separation between yeast and trub. It looks like all trub now. Next time I'll try ur method shakes_beer.

Thanks for the help!
