What is the highest price for yeast that you have seen?
Both of the stores in Omaha charge $10.00 for White Labs vials and $5.00 for packs of US-05. Anyone got that beat?

I don't want to and hope I never beat that price! It's like they want you to shop online. Good God.

I know what you mean. I am all for supporting the little guy but not at an almost 50% premium for the same item. One of the places, Kirk's wanted $3.20 for a pound of Carafa III.

The home brew shop here in St. Louis is pretty expensive. I've had conversations with them and they say they try to get the best possible prices from distributors and pass them down to the customer. However I don't believe it. But truly I think it's because they don't get nearly the volume of orders that the online sellers do, so they have to make up for it with slightly higher prices.

Sorry to say I buy the majority of my equipment and ingredients online.

buy one vial/packet and start washing :fro:

best decision I've ever made. all you have to to is invest in some 8oz ball jars, and they pay for themselves after the first washing.

I have the luck of being within a 15 minute drive of 3 GOOD brew shops. I get almost all of my grain there. However, i order almost all of my yeast, and hops from rebel brewer. $.99 for EKG and saaz? Why would I give a local shop $3.25?

To answer your question, our local shops have the liquid strains at $7.25. I just order a bunch of dry packets from rb, and use the liquid only when they style calls for it.

yeah yeast washing is a good thing. I've done it for awhile. My only problem is I want to use all different types of yeast and don't want to store 10+ mason jars in my fridge. However, if you have a few house beers then washing and reusing really makes sense. No reason to buy the same yeast over and over.

I've been washing into 12oz bottles, this prevents having to pay for jars or lids. So far it's a great method and has reduced the cost of washing drastically.

If you want there to be local home brew stores you have to shop at local home brew stores. I'm sure you've met a lot of the guys who work at and own those places. I've yet to meet any who are rich.

I never thought about using bottles. I like the jars because they are a lot smaller than bottles and they are stackable. I think I only paid 6.50 for a dozen, so they aren't too expensive, plus I use them for other brewing things like storing hops prior to my brew day.

I agree within reason. I don't live in Omaha and just stopped in to see what the prices were. The two stores in Omaha are seriously within 50 yards of one another. With prices like that, it doesn't really give me much of a reason to stop in and pick up things that I normally would have ordered via the Internet or picked up elsewhere. The Brew Hut in Denver by comparison has specialty grains for around $1.85 per pound and yeast for around $7.00. As I get to both towns from time to time, I am more inclined to go with the store that has more reasonable prices even if I have to wait a few weeks until I am in that town.
