I do hope Screaming Hill evolves to produce some interesting beers from stuff on their farm. I do like the atmosphere as well.

I agree on Cypress being unfortunately unimpressive. I think they had a double oatmeal or chocolate stout that was good.

I've also have been to Departed Soles a few times. Cool atmosphere, zero parking which drives me nuts in JC and the beers have improved over time. A friend of mine is the owner/brewer and I think he's very slowly learning what it takes to break into the culture and be considered a good brewery. I think the cup of sole was a decent beer.

Has anyone been to Cypress? Departed Soles? Screaming hill?

i've been to Cypress and Screaming Hill. Cypress was meh... to say the least and Screaming Hill's beers were alright but the place is amazing. really nice to be able to grab a pint and go sit outside on a beautiful farm!

I second that analysis of Screaming Hill. It's an absolutely beautiful place to sit and enjoy a beer.

It's also like 15 mins from Laurita Winery. If you have a few glasses of wine, you could easily get lost wandering around that place for hours. It really is just an enormous, beautiful piece of property.

Unfortunately it does seem that quite a few of the newer NJ breweries are putting out mediocre product at best. There are definitely exceptions, and many of the brewers I've met recognize the issues (water chemistry is a MAJOR common theme) so hopefully this improves with time.

The high-quality product at Conclave - thanks to Timmush - is a good example of what can be done when you pay attention to water chemistry from day 1, and work hard to continually develop and evolve great recipes. Magnify has been steadily dialing it in and showing noticeable improvement. Dark City has a lot of work to do, but those guys definitely know what they're doing so I'm confident. I've also tasted their wild ale culture, and it is absolutely on point. DJPhresh is working his ass off to turn Demented around; I tasted eight of his batches last weekend and they are well on their way to very good things. I am also highly confident that we'll see great things from CzigMeister almost right out of the gate. Matt definitely knows how to brew for quality, and when to dump a batch - an oft-overlooked but extremely important practice. ;)

Still, I worry about many of the others. For now, you can pack your tasting room every weekend regardless of quality, but quality will matter more and more as time goes on and the mainstream becomes more experienced. Not every brewer has the palate or brewing acumen of the guys I mentioned above, and breweries that can't or won't continue striving to improve are going to fail sooner or later if market forces go the way the Brewer's Association and others predict. This is not entirely bad; I'd rather live in a New Jersey with 10 great breweries than one with 6 great breweries and 34 mediocre ones. Still, I'd love to have 40 great ones, so I really do hope those others find a way to recognize the true quality of their product and put in the effort to fix it.

That's my $0.02.

ok... so is the hatred for Magnify just with a few people on BA and reddit? Or is this an ongoing affair that I still haven't seen in person?

P.S. hope this wasn't asked recently.. I've been drinkin today, and it's been glorious

Even the big guy upstairs rested on Sunday
I had to drink wine all day because I couldn't come up with a suitable substitution(brewery) for my group of friends. We rolled right through flemington. I see there's a stand alone Roy Rogers now. Think I know where I'll end up after my next conclave visit. Also saw a chick fil a. They seem to share the same dislike of money and are also closed on Sundays.

On the previous point, Brix seems to be improving batch by batch. I'm going to try to get into Alementary this week or next, before they open for reals, and see how they're tasting. My store has 16 lines to fill and slowly but surely Jersey beers are taking over more lines. Not on purpose. Also heard a fairly well known and established beer bar may be testing the market for sale. I'm gonna look into it as I am in the market to fill the copper mine void.

Haven't seen any Magnify hate. Everyone I've talked to has been loving the cans (more than I)

My brother goes to Snug Harbor which is close by (it's no Coppermine but it might fill that void a little)

yeah... a lot of the regulars now go to Snug, Cowans, or Brix...

I will stick to not having a regular place unless a good beer bar opens up... the Mine was never close to me, I just loved it so much... going up that way now makes no sense for me...

right now, my favorite place is Capital Craft... but I'll only go if I want to go out for dinner... otherwise, Casa de Os is where I drink

Casa de (insert name here) is usually always cheaper too. The people watching may not be as good, however, but it may also mean dealing with less ********. So it's all how you look at it :)

I just realized how little i get out these days without Copper Mine in the mix.

Haven't tried Cowans or Snug but Dog & Cask does a good job with their presentation/list etc.. Just miss the local/dive aspect of the Copper Mine.
