Stay in the general tourist areas, mind your business, speak the language, and you'll be fine. We are tentatively planning on moving down there (somewhere in MX - we both really like Huatulco) in about two-three years (for a year) to see how we like it.

We are going to Merida/Sisal next month for the wife's over the hill, so we'll see where that falls in terms of ranking :)
Hopefully, 2yrs. We'd like to hear your experience. There are plenty of Airbnbs so you never know, might run into each other!

OT, electrolyte concoction before another beer. Back to f-ing work tomorrow after a wonderful 10days off.

HM toasted sugar cider. 3 yrs in the bottle. Didn't get the caramel flavor I was hoping for but it's tasty.

@BongoYodeler, I'm drooling for early retirement to arrive. Got SWMBO off the Oregon coast thing and convinced her North Carolina was the place to be. 5 destinations into this, hopefully this sticks. NC is very retirement friendly.

Pretty green PA. Little dryer then intended and ended up at 6.2%. Columbus/Cascade/Hop Oil

My wife’s 2 brothers and biological father all live in NC. I love visiting there. One brother and dad live in Wilmington and the other brother lives on the complete opposite side of the state just outside Mt. Airy (Mayberry)

Just curious, what made you give up on the Oregon plan?

Today is day 5 of the Beer Advent Calendar. Under flap number 5 we find Erlkönig Hell, Bayrisches Vollbier from ERL-Bräu, Geiselhöring, Germany, since 1871.

Breaking it down, this means ERL King Hell, Bavarian Full Bier, their take on a Helles Lager. I’ve had a LOT of Helles Lagers this year from a variety of different brewers. Comparatively speaking, Erlkönig Hell, 5.0% ABV hits me a bit differently than other Helles Lagers. Color, carbonation and lack of lacing I’ve seen before a number of times. I’m still working through this Vollbier thing, seems to me that is the rough equivalent of “Export”, however at 5.0% ABV, it is a bit low to be considered an Export.

This one is more highly carbonated, and it gives the Helles a slight “Zing” which hits you again and again as you proceed through the pint. Sort of attention grabbing in some ways. Personally, on my own kegs I’ve reeled back from 10 psi down to 9 psi and enjoy most of my German lagers at the lower setting. I think if this came out of a keg, it might be a 12 psi carbonation level. I think this type of beer benefits from a less lively C02 charge.

Otherwise, flavor is there, I think this Helles needs a little less zing. Prost!

2 from last night after long day 3.5 hours one way to see a specialist for my wife, so 7 hours in the car plus 1.5 in the doctor's office, not counting the waiting room. So a stop at a pub on the way home sounded like a great idea. Started with PU then saw an equilibrium on the menu. Had a few of each.

Interesting. Wilmington is a focal point for us. I'd like to be a bit inland and out of the city for tax purposes. Once we mentioned we've changed our minds again to NC, there's been nothing but rave reviews of the state from people familiar with it.

On a side note, I mentioned previously, a work buddy I've known for decades as a home brewer bought a brewery in Asheville. They're retiring and heading out in spring I believe.

I say Wilmington, but they actually live in suburbs…father in law in Castle Hayne and brother in law a little north in Hampstead. Wilmington is a cool town. The beaches (Wrightville, Carolina and Kure) are all nice. Lots of history (military and cultural) if you’re into that kind of thing. I’ll definitely look you up if you make the move.
The local “international” airport (ILM) is awesome. About 20-30 minutes once you walk through the front door and you’re through security and at your gate.

Was that the day FDR lifted prohibition?
Per the internet, "The proposed amendment was ratified on December 5, 1933, whereupon Secretary of State William Philips certified the three-fourths requirement being reached. President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued a proclamation regarding the new Twenty-first Amendment, confiding his trust in the American people that they would “not bring upon themselves the curse of excessive use of intoxicating liquors to the detriment of health, morals, and social integrity.”"

I daresay we are a little dicey on that last bit...

Like giving a kid an axe and saying, "don't hit anything with it!"

Our neighbors dropped off an assortment of beers. One of them is some kind of pumpkin barleywine. So far, I hadn't found a pumpkin ale I liked. Nevertheless I tried this one, as I'll try anything except incest and folk dancing.

Couldn't get through it.

My no-pumpkin beer rule stands.

Time to go pour something else, cause it's happy hour in the Max Stout abode.

Kicking back at home with a Duvel after a day at Forgotten Star Brewing. Did a pro/am where we brewed 15 bbl of a Grodziskie of my recipe. I'll post later in the pro/am thread I had started and give more deets, and pics.

My first taste of pro brewing. A lot of work, but had a great time!

Congrats. It’s a fun time, great experience, and at least for me, fave me some validation lol

Flap number 6, corresponding with Advent Calendar date December 6, 2023 brings us a terrific and tasty 5.3% ABV Märzen. I have to admit I’m a little perplexed however. On the front of the can it says Privatbraueri Hösl made this fine brew. On the back side it says Privatbrauerei Eger, Grossköllnbach, Germany gets the credit. So all you sleuths out there, it’s either one or both or maybe one producing for the other? I am befuddled.

I’m not too confused to sort out this beer though, this is a terrific brew. Hösl Märzenbier, comes to us today in a 500 ml can, but I have to say, I need TWO of these big boys so I can fill up my Maßkrug! It is that good!

Märzenbiers, or “March Beers” are traditionally to be brewed in March and lagered all Summer for consumption in the Autumn and Winter, centered around the Oktoberfest celebration. This one is rich and malty, but most importantly, DRINKABLE! It has that old school Märzen flavor loved by Millions, dare I say BILLIONS of beer drinkers worldwide! Nice head, incredible lacing, this one’s a keeper!

Advertisers – you too can reach this prime beer drinking demographic – just send beer! (Just kidding!) Prost!
