Garaminger Kirta arrives to us behind Decemberfest Door #4 this week. A “Devil of a Brew” looking at the cartoon artwork, it is a “Dunkles Weissbier” which literally translates to “Dark White Beer”. To me that’s another one of those beer misnomers, like “Dark India Pale Ale”. Fellas and Gals, we have to come up with better typing of beer styles, “Dark Pale” and “White Dark” does not cut it in my book. Like making a Left-Right turn, or turning the lights On-Off. Enough said.

Like many other wheat beers, most all begin life as ales. So, I am assuming this is an ale like most other Weiss / Wheat / Weizen beers. It has the distinctive spicy phenolic character on the front end, however I have to admit, I couldn’t even discern it by the end of the pint. Taste being what it is, we drop into the styles quickly and lose sensitivity to the weird stuff as you go on further and further into the glass. Like Smoke beer for example, or complaining spouses. We just don’t notice it after a while!

OK, seriously, this is a good beer, made with barley, wheat and roasted barley. Produced by Graminger Weissbräu KG, located in Altöiting, Germany. It is a “Natutrüb” beer, meaning it is likely unfiltered and cloudy, sometimes with yeast present in the murk. 5.0% ABV, small head, some fading lacing.

I will admit wheat beers are not my favorite, and they have been declining in Germany too from what I read. The phenolic thing is a bit tough for me to swallow - literally and figuratively! This one was OK though, I think once you get on this pony, you get used to the ride quickly. Prost!

@BongoYodeler, I'm drooling for early retirement to arrive. Got SWMBO off the Oregon coast thing and convinced her North Carolina was the place to be. 5 destinations into this, hopefully this sticks. NC is very retirement friendly.

Pretty green PA. Little dryer then intended and ended up at 6.2%. Columbus/Cascade/Hop Oil

I'm retired now but I remember the occasional day where I woke up with a vision problem - I just couldn't see myself going to work that day. 😅

Lol, wife and I throw that back and forth at each other (except she doesn't really get sick days).

We are headed down to Mexico - condo on the beach for about $350k (if you're into "condo" living) and while gas is equivalent to California, everything else is dirt cheap. You can get a house for not a whole lot more...

Yeah, Hautulco was an option for a while. I have no interest in Mexico myself plus being in care of a disabled grandson made me nervous being so far away from multiple specialist he needs. Where are you looking? I'm sure you can get some very cheap beach condos in Alcapulco! 😏

Oaxaca/Huatulco area and possible Merida, tbd (Caribbean is too white).

I assume you know the Merida story? Safest place in Mexico since all the drug lords families live there as a truce?

Stay in the general tourist areas, mind your business, speak the language, and you'll be fine. We are tentatively planning on moving down there (somewhere in MX - we both really like Huatulco) in about two-three years (for a year) to see how we like it.

We are going to Merida/Sisal next month for the wife's over the hill, so we'll see where that falls in terms of ranking :)

Hopefully, 2yrs. We'd like to hear your experience. There are plenty of Airbnbs so you never know, might run into each other!

OT, electrolyte concoction before another beer. Back to f-ing work tomorrow after a wonderful 10days off.

My wife’s 2 brothers and biological father all live in NC. I love visiting there. One brother and dad live in Wilmington and the other brother lives on the complete opposite side of the state just outside Mt. Airy (Mayberry)

Just curious, what made you give up on the Oregon plan?

Today is day 5 of the Beer Advent Calendar. Under flap number 5 we find Erlkönig Hell, Bayrisches Vollbier from ERL-Bräu, Geiselhöring, Germany, since 1871.

Breaking it down, this means ERL King Hell, Bavarian Full Bier, their take on a Helles Lager. I’ve had a LOT of Helles Lagers this year from a variety of different brewers. Comparatively speaking, Erlkönig Hell, 5.0% ABV hits me a bit differently than other Helles Lagers. Color, carbonation and lack of lacing I’ve seen before a number of times. I’m still working through this Vollbier thing, seems to me that is the rough equivalent of “Export”, however at 5.0% ABV, it is a bit low to be considered an Export.

This one is more highly carbonated, and it gives the Helles a slight “Zing” which hits you again and again as you proceed through the pint. Sort of attention grabbing in some ways. Personally, on my own kegs I’ve reeled back from 10 psi down to 9 psi and enjoy most of my German lagers at the lower setting. I think if this came out of a keg, it might be a 12 psi carbonation level. I think this type of beer benefits from a less lively C02 charge.

Otherwise, flavor is there, I think this Helles needs a little less zing. Prost!

2 from last night after long day 3.5 hours one way to see a specialist for my wife, so 7 hours in the car plus 1.5 in the doctor's office, not counting the waiting room. So a stop at a pub on the way home sounded like a great idea. Started with PU then saw an equilibrium on the menu. Had a few of each.
