Going to be in New York for a few days at the end of March. Have to work all day and a work dinner one night so will only have a Monday and Wednesday evening available, and also staying up in White Plains.

Thinking about heading into the city for an evening or two. Was thinking Torst > Grimm > Interboro one night. Also heard good things about The Well. Any suggestions?

I'm guessing the train is the best way to come in from White Plains?

I don't recommend Tørst to anyone anymore. Gone are the days when it was the best option - now it's just the most expensive option. Grimm/Interboro/The Well is a good combo though, and if you're hungry you're close enough to Roberta's. (Although I also really like the food at Interboro.)

Yeah taking the train is your best bet, but note that it lets off at Grand Central so you're probably looking at over an hour from door to door. Not that there's anything better near GCT though, so I don't actually have an alternative suggestion.

A lot of bars are expensive these days with $10,$12, even $14 8-10oz drafts. Used to think the same for Torst but you get the smaller size beers to choose even if it's dollar/ oz ratio you're not stuck with the one expensive beer and can try more smaller pours. The bartenders are pretty attentive there as well.

Grimm-Interboro-the Well is a good trio though. Did that last weekend w/ Roberta's to end the night. "Enjoy" to OP!

The L Train has been stopping around 10.45PM most nights at the moment for engineering work. Would keep an eye on that unless you were planning on getting an uber back etc.

Yeah I don't mind taking uber, that is good to know though.

Actually turns out now that I will have pretty much the entire day Monday to do what I want. I was thinking something like:

Joe's on Carmine for a slice
Blind Tiger
Other Half
St. Gambrinus (mostly for to-go cans but maybe a draft as well)
Grimm
Interboro
The Well (only if I haven't already had too much at this point)
Roberta's

Then was thinking of sticking closer to GCT on Wed night. Thoughts on Ginger Man vs Haymaker vs As Is as far as food + beer selection is concerned?

Well had a good time.

Did Joe’s > Blind Tiger > Other Half > St Gambrinus > Threes > Roberta’s > Grimm > Interboro

Roberta’s was really fantastic. Grimm’s barrel aged fruited sours we’re also great. The people at Interboro were all really cool.

Other Half still had a bunch of Pastrytown stuff on tap so that was fun.

I haven't been to Other Half in awhile, but plan to swing by on Saturday morning not too long after open. They're releasing like 6 canned beers that day. I don't give a **** about buying cans. Are the can sales still at all a **** show, and with the current set up, are can sales entirely separate from the tasting room? Like, can I just pop into the tasting room for some beer without dealing with the can line? I think that's how it was when last I visited the old room, but I have never been there on a can release day since they opened the newer, bigger space.

Cans are sold out of the warehouse by Smith St. Other than that, I don't really know what the scene is like. I'm assuming the taproom will be very busy.

Cans are technically separate. But Saturdays are always a complete shitshow now and days with big can releases are worse.

If anybody gives a ****:

1. The can line at Other Half is entirely separate from the tasting room, which was totally pleasant and laid back; and

2. There is a deconstructed popcorn hot chicken dish at Haymaker (that is a recipe of Executive Chef Emily Chapman, of Chopped fame) that is ******* GOOD.
 
I am too lazy to read this whole thread. Wife is going to Broadway. Will have 3-5 hours to myself with a drinking buddy. Looking for some walkable places for good beer and one or two for food.

Beer Culture on 45th st between 8th and 9th.
Haymaker on 29th st between 7th and 8th. Good food and good beer.
 
I don't hear much about Folksbier. Of the three breweries I visited that was easily my favorite. Tasty beers.

went to Ivan Ramen in the LES last night and they've stepped up their beer game in a big way. They've got a nice draft selection, though certain things are a bit expensive (though others were reasonable). But their can and bottle list is quite extensive. Again, prices are a little all over the place but nothing really outrageous. They've got some nice lambic (3F, Tilquin) along with local stuff and quality distro.
I hadn't been there in years and they always had some craft but nothing close to what they have now.

I went there back in May of last year and had some things from Tired Hands and Magic Rock. Was super impressed by the selection.

Was not super impressed by the ramen though, but maybe it was just an off night.

I've been there three times in the last year or so, the first and third visits I was blown away by the ramen, while the second visit left much to be desired. Consistency issues aside, I would put them just behind Ichiran for best ramen I've had in the city. Still need to try Ippudo and Nakamura.

Yeah Ippudo is by far my pick. Love.
 
Pretty stoked about trying ramen at Ivan and EAK ramen on my next trip to NY. Iekei is my favorite style and it's near impossible to find anyone doing it outside Japan. EAK seems like they've done it justice. Tabetomo also looks promising and it's nice seeing a stateside ramen shop focused on tsukemen.

Was also hoping to try Ramen Shack since I've been internet friends with Keizo (he used to run Bassanova and is credited for inventing the ramen burger) for over a decade and it would've finally been a chance to meet irl, but they closed down at the end of March :(

I've tried just about every "recommended" ramen place in NYC. Favorites: Totto, Nakamura, Hide-chan, Bassanova, Zundo-ya (believe its now closed unfortunately)
 
These are all awesome Ramen recommendations but my favorite is going to Ramen Lab and trying whatever pop-up Sun Noodles invited. Always great ramen and usually something completely different than the norm. Just gotta make sure they are open that week.
