Does the middle of a corn field in the back of a pick-up truck count?

Not asking for a friend.

Man, this is some BS from Dogfish Head that no one outside of South Florida will probably hear about...

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/florida-keys/article139353353.html

They threatened to sue over "Hogfish Amber" from Florida Keys Brewing despite a "Hogfish" being an actual (******* delicious) caught locally in the Keys, because the name is too similar to "Dogfish".

Brewers changing the name cause they can't afford to fight.

Florida Keys Brewing are good people and they're so tiny (they only distro in the Keys) that this is just ******* bullying.

You have to defend your trademarks or risk losing them. It's not bullying, it's a legal requirement to own a trademark. Florida Keys Brewing was attempting to trademark Hogfish, which probably raised some flags for DFH. They are really similar names, in the same industry, with overlapping distro. The potential for confusion is there.

I get that to some degree but I also think it's lousy when there's this much of a power differential.

They could produce more, or keg more of it so locals can drink it regularly, or only sell it to Mug Clubbers, and only sell those memberships in person. Clark is trying to capitalize on the secondary market, which isn't dumb, but it's a bit slimy feeling to me.

Is it more or less slimy than TG people trading the beer at secondary values for bourbon? They've done that too.

Well right, you can do both. I just find the whole "HURR DURR EXPENSIVE BOTTLES" thing to be idiotic. Some breweries are claiming this secondary-market money for themselves? You don't say!

The only surprising thing (well, besides morons being willing to fork over a grand for a stupid stout) is that it's this uncommon and took this long. If more places did it we'd see less secondary shitlordery.

Its not a legal requirement when the entire name is another, completely different proper noun.

They're not riffing off Dogfish, they're naming their local beer after a local fish.

With this kind of logic we would need to choose whether to feed the dogs or the hogs at the feed store. Never at the same time.

Got a feeling people are going to pick the dogs for being man's so-called "best friend" but that also means we won't be "bringing the bacon" home for dinner.

which is happening faster, new breweries opening or beer nerds turning their backs on breweries open longer than 1 year?

I was actually talking to a friend about this the other night. How long does it take for breweries to not be "cool" anymore? Logsdon and Upright used to get a crazy amount of hype out in the PNW, but that seems to have died down in recent years.

seeing deGarde start to take bullets here is really weird

almost as strange as the griping about beers people haven't had yet.. just because they're new and popular

They can cut down on the shitlording and still make the beer available for ordinary people who just want to drink it, especially locals. Someone on our Facebook group brought up HOTD Dave, which I get, but Assassin and MD and KBBS are still in production. If the money goes to charity then I think that's fine.

Well, Logsdon did change brewers. That screwed things up pretty badly. They still make some great beers, just not as often.

This happened long before the brewer switch, though. Just beer fandom being finicky. No different than anything else.
Heh, it's easy to forget these days. Remember when Peche 'n' Brett was the beer of the moment? Haven't seen or heard about that one in over a year at least.

We actually had this conversation while drinking a bottle of last year's PnB, which was still absolutely fantastic.

There's still interest in PnB up here, but that's it. Kinda the same deal with Upright, people slightly get hyped for Fantasia, but everything else is just under the radar. I mean, I love these breweries and I shouldn't be complaining but damn people get caught up in new shiny.

Edit: And Kuhnhenn. I remember a few years ago there was tons of hype over that brewery and now not a peep.

Yeah I just remember around the time TB started it was on everyone's list either ISO or FT.

Kuhnhenn BA beers are still somewhat hard to get. **** Surly used to have hype, and those days are long gone, doesn't mean Darkness or BA Darkness are all that easy to get.

Maybe because PnB is by far their best beer.

Upright, I will take all of, so long as it's seen Brett. Will crush anniversary saison all day long.

There was a dude on BA who, prompted by the Speakeasy shutdown, was worried that a local brewery (Yards) who took out a loan for expansion might not be able to repay it because their beer "fills the shelves" in the suburbs.

I mean, every store I go to has shelves stocked by all the breweries they carry but whatever.

For Surly and Kuhnhenn, I think losing a key player and thus quality suffering is more than a small part of the problem.
Even some of the most devoted locals on here aren't drinking Surly anymore.
