How has no one said this when I just did?
Obvious joke is obvious, glad you caught that one.
It's a supply and demand issue.
It really isn't.
You don't like the price? Don't go buy it. Simple as that.
Yeah I love when people take this route anytime bad pricing comes up. Obviously no one is twisting my arm here to purchase anything that doesn't change the fact that it's seriously dumb and further proves why beer is such a joke right now.

What annoys me about that honestly isn't even the price, it's that TG runs a "mug club" that has hundreds (thousands?) of members all over the country. Shouldn't the point of a mug club be to get local fans who drink there regularly, not just out of state beer geeks looking to get reservations for rare bottles?

Beer is ******* dumb, I will whole heartedly agree.
But what's dumber is the people and sites that feed the dumbing down of it.

I'll stick to my shelf **** beer and Coors light and let the neanderthals fight it out for their beer merit badges.

They could call it the "Come Help Us Build a Big Pile Of Cash To Jump Into Club" I guess?

Do... do you know what "supply and demand" means?

If I were TG I'd sell it for even more. Clearly there are tons of people willing to pay $1k for these stupid bottles, so charge that (or whatever) until they stop being idiots. Or would you rather reselling shitlords make money on these things?

Meanwhile I'll be over here drinking JW Lees and Saison Bernice.

Yeah this has been established for quite some time, it doesn't matter what the price is at all...shitlords gonna shitlord.

Eh, shitlords are a very small portion of a brewery's overall consumers (typically). By putting forth such outrageous pricing, you could actually turn off some of your other consumers (read locals) even though they're not the target for such a thing. The fact is that a raise from $400 to $1,000 really isn't that much actual profit compared to working towards your day-in/day-out consumers.

$600 extra from 50 people? I agree it isn't gonna start a whole new brewery but I'm guessing they don't typically light 30k on fire as if it's nothing...

$600*50 = $30,000. You honestly think they clear 30k in pure profit for a couple hours of sales with the locals?

Also, the entire point is if breweries charge secondary prices then there's no more money for middlemen. If people are going to pay these stupid prices then there are two places the money can go:

1) The breweries.
2) Reselling shitlords.

Which do you prefer? Because it sounds like you want some magical pixie third option.

Of course not. I'm merely pointing out that continually seeking out short term profit may not always be the best long term business strategy. That's all.

Edit: I have no bloody idea what TG or anyone else's business is nor their market, and jacking prices up to crazy amounts may in fact be the best strategy. I'm merely providing a counter-point to what I constantly see which is people weighing in on what businesses are doing without understanding the full picture.

Right, but this also assumes that all bottles are flipped by shitlords and there's no one actually buying the beer to drink.

I understand the sentiment and think there's probably a middle ground we can reach, but I honestly think there are only a handful of breweries that could sell through a full supply of beer at secondary market prices.

I don't think selling a few bottles at astronomically high prices, probably to beer geeks who drove hours and waited in line for hours, is really good to have much of an effect on local perception. If the prices were lower, the line would have just started that much earlier.

This, on the other hand...

Beat me to it. Apparently Westbrook does this to? Is that right?

They could produce more, or keg more of it so locals can drink it regularly, or only sell it to Mug Clubbers, and only sell those memberships in person. Clark is trying to capitalize on the secondary market, which isn't dumb, but it's a bit slimy feeling to me.

Man, this is some BS from Dogfish Head that no one outside of South Florida will probably hear about...

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/florida-keys/article139353353.html

They threatened to sue over "Hogfish Amber" from Florida Keys Brewing despite a "Hogfish" being an actual (******* delicious) caught locally in the Keys, because the name is too similar to "Dogfish".

Brewers changing the name cause they can't afford to fight.

Florida Keys Brewing are good people and they're so tiny (they only distro in the Keys) that this is just ******* bullying.
