I was looking for kettles to buy and noticed that a big concern in purchasing a kettle was to buy a kettle that will have excess space in case of it boiling over. Which brought me to this technique in boiling pasta.

When I boil pasta I place a wooden spoon over the rim of the pot and never have to worry about the water boiling over. For whatever reason, the spoon tames the boil of the water preventing it from boiling over.

Hopefully this technique can help everyone out. If not for brewing, try it when you make pasta. It is one less thing to worry about in the kitchen.

Just pick up a container of Fermcap. I add a drop for my starters and about 7-8 drops for a 5.5 gallon. Never have to worry about boilovers!

Unfortunately, I think wort and water behave a little differently during a boilover, with all the sugars in wort the boilover can be fierce, and quite different than water. While the spoon trick might work or help, I would suggest more aggressive measures taming a wort boilover. Until you have experienced one, you have no idea how violent it can be, especially on an electric stove where the heat cannot be instantly cut. I remember well the first boilover I experienced, and it has been over twenty years. The wort foams and quickly boils over and doesn't want to stop, and keeps going like it will empty the pot, putting a gallon or so of hot sticky wort all over the stove top and kitchen floor. Thank goodness it was a rental property, the wort cooks on the stovetop and gets hard like glass, almost impossible to clean off.

One of the most common reasons new brewers get kicked out of the kitchen and brew in the backyard!
