Question.

How long of a drive is it in Pittsburgh terms from HitchHiker to that Target, Giant Eagle and Trader Joes? Also from that area to Spoonwood.

Says 3 miles between them but that could be daaaaaaaaays

That's my neck of the woods.... Totally depends on traffic. Probably about 15 minutes or so, depends on which lights you hit entirely though. That stretch of road is the bane of my existence.

I have more fun watching my 12 year old son play soccer than any professional game. I never blinked at soccer until my son got into it. Now, I am hooked. I watch Barclays almost every week (not really following any team in particular). Going to see Real Madrid this summer too. Being so close to the sport now, I appreciate how much more difficult it is than I ever thought. Love watching soccer and drinking beer :)

And now...back to beer. For those from Pittsburgh, how often are the Voodoo barrel room releases? When do you think we can expect the next release? :)
Yea my son plays soccer and loves it that is when I got into it my self. I know ppl say it is boring but man it's not the skill and the endurance that soccer player have is amazing.

There's not a great way to get from the south hills mall area to spoonwood but it shouldn't be too bad.

This was release number 4.....2 in 2013 (March and September I think) and then the BR3 in 2015

I think most of us know the answer you will get if you ask voodoobrewery about when the next release is.....

Yep, kid friendly. There is even a jungle gym down the stairs.

I just convinced my wife we should go this route instead of Erie tomorrow. She needs to go to Target and we need to get groceries too, plus she loves Trader Joe's. So it was an easy convincing. Hitchhiker here I come. Plus my kids love hummus.

I wish they would let a proxy pick up or do the signup online (eventbrite). The whole business with being in person for both the signup and pickup is a little irritating. I can swing a trip to Pittsburgh easily. But 2 trips is a challenge.

I was talking to my grandfather one time (born in 1912) about soccer and he told me he played in high school which really surprised me. This would have been in the 1920s. Now, he was a dairy farmer in rural central Pennsylvania where, for the past 60 years soccer has not been considered "an American sport" and is rarely played and even looked down upon. It's interesting how things come and go over time. I'm into soccer because I played it growing up and still do. It was the sport I was best at so that helped.

I'd suggest taking 79 to the Bridgeville exit or something and avoid going through the city. The stretch of road after you get through the tunnels is horrible.

Ha. Even my own personal interests have come and gone. Football was my favorite sport to watch in HS and college, then eventually soccer matched football in college and now I'll watch soccer over anything. Quite literally anything, even bad teams.

Has anybody been down to a Riverhounds game? The soccer isn't amazing but it's such a beautiful, picturesque location and the back drop of the city is phenomenal. Plus you can get so close to the field you can actually touch it, hear the players trash-talking and the beer selection is actually pretty decent.

I think Im also making a trip down to Hitchhiker tomorrow. Should be fun.

Very fun time at a riverhounds games if they do expand that stadium I hope they don't loose that view. I think if they built it up some more would be a great place for Pitt to play football in

That's the point
So its only intended for Pittsburgh folks to get this?

Does anyone know of other breweries that do the same thing?

I have gotten stuff from Alesmith, Willoughby Brewing, Fifty Fifty, and a host of other east coast and west coast releases and they do one or the other (online registration or proxy pickup).

Yeah, I think it's intended to be something of a special treat for the people who keep the lights on by drinking stuff at Voodoo the rest of the year.
I don't know how Voodoo's barrel program compares to alesmith or 50/50 volume-wise, but I would assume it's significantly smaller batches - so local folks would have a hell of a time getting any if it was suddenly opened up to online sales or something.

I was also thinking back to this past years Nut smasher release which is probably smaller and they did an online registration. But I hear what you are saying.

I'm not sure Nut Smasher has quite the same level of national interest as Voodoo barrel releases. But I don't pay nearly as much attention to these things as I used to, so that could just be my fallacious assumption since I just heard about Nut Smasher for the first time like a month or two ago (and would still have to consult Google to find out what brewery makes it).

Erie people can get it and a lot of Cleveland people make the trips

Plenty of other great beer out there if you can't make it to Voodoo.

Like this post if you're going to the kickback bottle share tomorrow at 7pm so that I can get an idea as to how many people will be there (about 7 from facebook will be attending). You don't have to bring a super whale, but try to bring something nice that other's might be interested in trying. I'll be bringing a tete de cuvee, '14 huna, '14 pugachev's cobra, '16 foolery, '14 sierra nevada BA maple stout, and possibly another bomber.

I plan on limiting the tete pours to ~2-3 oz per person in order to maximize the amount of people who get to try it. Cheers!

Hey guys doesn't look like I'm gonna make it tonight
