I made a oatmeal stout that is now fermenting like crazy.. its in my 5 gal carboy and coming out the air-lock. It was a 5 gal batch that had a post boil O.G at 1.050. What do I do?? I think I am going to get a blow off tube tomorrow.. I changed the air lock for a new sanitized one but.. when I took off the air lock it foamed out like crazy...

Thanks for any help!

If it's a 3 piece airlock then you can use some force and your 5/16 hose for your auto-syphon will fit inside of it. Now you have to post picks. just the rules.

And cut the star off the bottom to avoid any blockage from chunks. As for the "rules", if you don't post pics it didn't happen! I'm just sayin' - we want our beer porn! :D

Or use foam control..It work great!

Pull the stopper out and let it go.
It will not hurt your beer at all and the last thing you want is to find the stopper in the ceiling.
When things slow down put the stopper and the air lock back in place.
If you want you can put a upside down plastic cup over the top.

I have cleaned up after a blown bucket lid once and it was a mess. It hit the ceiling so i know your stopper and a good amount of beer will go that way if you get plugged up.

Pull the stopper now.

good luck

okay guys I took your advice and made my own blow off tube from a 3 peace airlock and siphon hose.

I am freaked out about sanitation.

Out is fine... in is bad. As long as it is blowing foam and CO2 out the top nothing can get in anyway. It just makes a mess.

Oh and I'm pretty sure everyone has done it at least once. My first heavy stout took me forever to clean up and the closet still smells like stout. Pretty sure I can still see the outline where the geyser hit the ceiling, heh. :p

And my latest bent......

GET ABUCKET FOR PRIMARY!!!

I know you want to look at it, but cleaning krausen out of a carboy or even a BB sucks.

ok ok guys I got home from class today and cut the bottom off an airlock and replaced it. I found out that the old one was not clogged and could have stayed on...

Thanks for the help!!!!!

If you're concerned about the airlock, grab a 1" OD tube and stuff it in the neck of the carboy, should be a tight fit, but that Will open up your flow. Your airlock rig should be fine, just keep an on it.
Don't worry about sanitation, well now. Nothing's contaminated, well the foam that escaped is, but you weren't drinking that anyways. :). The CO2 coming out will have kept any nasties from entering your beer.
There are several posts around here of people who insist that a blow off tube during initial fermentation is the way to go. So to them you just did yourself a favor.
Don't forget to remove your tube when the acidity subsides. I wouldn't think that cup of foam is very sanitary.

I have not used a foam control, but I don't know why you would want to add something to your wort that would interfere with fermentation. We try so hard to control everything to get a good active fermentation, then you are going to halt that? Seems like a bad idea, and counterproductive. Not saying it is wrong, I try to add as little possible to my wort, personal preference. I would just deal with aggressive fermentation, and consider it a blessing.

CHEERS!

Oxyclean and bleach work amazing. I don't touch any of my equipement or carboys anymore. 24 hr soak and its all sparkling.

Yeah my first batch I did the same thing. "I don't need this bucket, I'll just put it in the carboy then I can watch it." Big mistake, even my blow off tube blew off. Live and learn. Some PBW soaking in the carboy will clean it out in about an hour of soaking.

What you have built is my standard blow-off rig. You even use the same pitch I do. I use it on a 6 gallon better bottle just in case. And I've had a 5 gallon batch blow off through the 6 gallon bottle.

I have a couple of airlocks that I can't even find the innards to anymore

I did it with a Stone Arrogant Bastard clone a couple years ago. It turned out great.

What is the bad side of having a stout scented closet? I would pay for that.
