I am brewing Ed Worts Haus Pale Ale soon. His recipe calls for four hop additions of Cascade hops @ 6.6%. The Cascade hops I have are only 5.9%.

I'm sure it's a simple way to adjust for the different percentage, but I'm just not seeing it.

Any help would be appreciated.

That's only a .7% difference- I'd call it good enough. If you want to be more exact, though, you could do a little math.

You could increase the hops by.7%, or make the 60 minute addition 1.10 ounce instead of 1 ounce for example. The flavor and aroma hops don't change, since you want them for flavor and aroma, not the IBUs.

I've brewed that recipe many times and have substituted all kinds of different hops in it. I really doubt that you're going to be able to tell the difference.

If it was a bigger difference, I'd definitely increase the bittering hops. But when you're talking of 1/10 of an ounce or less, unless you have a highly accurate scale you'd just be guestimating anyway.

ok...thanks

You're pretty much running on blind faith with regards to the IBU's of the hops you buy anyway. LD Carlson, for example,, I've never seen them change the IBU's of any of their hops from year to year and you never really know where it comes from anyway. Hops direct, I might trust a little more, but it's still just that, trust.

Thanks for the help...I wasn't sure if it was going to be big deal or not. Ed's recipe calls for a total of 2oz of Cascade. The pre-assembled "kit" from Brewmasters Wharehouse has 3oz of Cascade hops in it.

I'll just stick to Ed's recipe and call it fair. Hoping to get this brewed up on Thanksgiving morning. It will give Dad and I something to do.

I just looked at my Beersmith files for this. That's AG. Beersmith put the IBU's in there, not me.

1.00 oz Cascade [5.50 %] (60 min) Hops 18.1 IBU
0.50 oz Cascade [5.50 %] (30 min) Hops 7.0 IBU
0.25 oz Cascade [5.50 %] (15 min) Hops 2.2 IBU
0.25 oz Cascade [5.50 %] (5 min) Hops 0.9 IBU

I just did the recipe in BS too. I adjusted the alpha to 5.9%. It looks like I could up the bittering addition to 1.4oz and end up with the same total IBU's that Ed has listed in his recipe(39IBU)
