Has to be russia. The flag on the boat on the bottom plus I'm fairly certain the white/blue ship moored on the other side is a voskhod type hydrofoil riverboat.

Right country Matt, but where in that country of 11 time zones? :) (Hint: Within 200 km of the last entry.)

Just as I suspected. New Valamo monastery, Lake Laatokka, Sortavala District, Republic of Karelia, Russia.

The old and original Valamo is at Heinävesi, Finland.[/QUOTE]

Валаамский архипелаг, Респу́блика Каре́лия, Росси́я!
Valaam archipelago, Republic of Karelia, Russia!

That's very interesting; never knew that.

Thought I'd throw you a soft one; you're up.

Savonlinna, Finland? About all I can be somewhat confident of is that it's somewhere in the Lakeland area of Finland

it's your "home" town, asikkala :D one of the few places with a sluice system in a lake instead of a river/waterway

If I'd want to be a d*ck I could say that's in fact incorrect :D for two reasons.

A) the municipality, or the town of Asikkala pictured is called Vääksy.

B) the sluice system is not IN a lake, but BETWEEN lakes päijänne and vesijärvi.

The only sluice, or canal of which I know of that actually is IN a lake meaning both ends indeed connect to the same water body (Päijänne) is the canal of Kalkkinen only about 20km away from where we live.

We live about the width of the picture worth to the left. Still within walking distance of the town center. What you don't see from the picture is the ridge that slices the town in two from left to right. I'll tell you a summer sunset from the top of the ridge that btw rises straight up from our backyard, looking over two lakes is a sight to behold.

very nice, we don't have much of a view here, but a lovely yard instead(waterside houses in savonlinna cost 3-4 times as much and have small plots)

I do live about 5 minutes walk from the castle and about 8 minutes from the center.

This is a BB&B; bed, breakfast and brewery. It was a glorious place. The hallway smelled like mash. One pic of the building and a couple looking out from my room. Looking for the name of the town or the brewery/beer.
