MrMalty Pitching Rate Question

So I'm going to be brewing a Schwarzbier this weekend and I recently bought a yeast starter kit to improve my beer. Acording to Mr. Malty I need to make a 4.34 Liter starter. Is that 4.34 liter of wort for the starter or 4.34 liter of yeast slurry that I need to grow and pitch? Either way it seems like a lot of starter to make in either case. I bought a 2 liter beaker and thought that was overkill but telling me I need 3 of these to grow a starter doesn't sound right to me.

Lagers tend to need about twice the yeast that an ale does. You could try stepping up a smaller starter so that you can start in your flask.
