Alright already! More extensive searching has revealed that Hanssens bottle date codes are one of the great mysteries of the universe. I'll just drink the damned thing and enjoy it. That is all....
I know when I asked a while back I was told not even the Hanssens people know what they meant.
 
Questions for Lambic producers!

Forgetfu and I are going to Belgium next week for a site research trip. We are meeting with brewers and blenders, visiting cafes and pubs, and photographing everything we can.

We’re starting to gather questions that we hope to ask, and we'd like your input. What questions would you like answered that are not already covered on lambic.info. Need clarification on bottle dating or cork markings? Want to know about a discontinued beer? Production questions?

We have created a simple google spreadsheet for you to add questions. What information would you like to know?

Naturally, there may be some questions they don't have an answer for, and others they don't want to answer. We may not ask all of the questions that you add, but we will use this information to help shape our conversations. Thanks for your help!
 
I can't edit the google doc from my ohone. Can you asked at 3F if the apprentice really blended intense red?

I added a question for Armand about OGV, that seems like a reasonable one because:

1) I want more OGV in the world.
2) We don't seem to know what its deal actually is.

My sister has a college level music education. She is 30 and lives with my parents with no job :( Not that you live with my parents or don't have a job :) PS I enjoy Phish ;)
I actually do not havea music degree, just finance. Took 3 courses that's all, and the courses I took before college.
Clapton also said Enoch Powell was the best politician in the world back in the 90s. So, you know.
That would be relevant if Clapton were a politician. OK I'm done.

OGV isn't any different than regular OG in my opinion. Not a different blend, nor a different recipe, just bottles held back specifically to be released later with different labels and for special events like 3F Open Beer Days. Some of the OGV bottling dates even match up with regular OG bottling dates.

It would still be nice to confirm it. Plus the bottle date thing could easily be true while there's something that differentiates the blends.

Y they no bottle faro? Straffe Winter would be a cool re-release.
 
Boon is the only one with technology to produce a "traditional" Faro without pasteurization, hence this was brewed at Boon. I believe he filters all the yeast and bacteria out (in the same way he makes his Kriek) and then adds candy sugar. To bottle Faro without somehow removing (or killing) the yeast would be to create bottle bombs.

That makes sense, but what about the bottled De Cam Faro?

In short, because Karel is just that crazy. There are a handful of ways to make shelf-stable sweet lambic based beers. Unfermentable sugar additions like saccharine, pasteurization, and filtration. Having been to De Cam, I seriously doubt him having the filtration or pasteurization equipment, and I know he's not the type for saccharine. All that leaves is adding sugar to old Lambic and hoping for the best.

I wouldn't be surprised if any remaining bottles were quite carbonated by now. There are two downsides to this, the first is that it will only taste as intended for maybe a month or so after bottling as the yeast and bacteria in the old Lambic will begin consuming the sugar relatively rapidly. The second is the eventual over-carbonated beer which now lacks the taste of Faro.

Neither of those things is Armand's style, hence him going the less mad route of having old Frank do it proper.
