Greetings,

I'm brewing up a 1.074 and realize I only have one package of 1056. Should I pitch one and see how it goes and then add additional yeast? Or should I throw in some dry yeast with it I have laying around

WY1056 is the same strain as US-05 (Chico) so you could pitch that along.

Or make a quick vitality starter from your smack pack. Much depends on how fresh that pack is and it's actual condition (cell count/vitality).

If you have a gallon ("wine") jug look up "shaken not stirred" starters. You can revitalize and raise the cell count from the yeast pack in 4-12 hours, using 1.5 liters of starter wort. Shaking vigorously and often while creating lots of foam is crucial to that process, as well as room temps or a bit higher (70-74F). If you have pure O2 on hand things can be speeded up even more.
