I'm trying to brew a Racer V clone extract. It recommends three different options for yeast, but none are the yeasts I have on hand.

It recommends:

Wyeast 1272 American Ale II
White Labs 051 California V
Danstar Bry-97

I have:
Wyeast 1056 American Ale (*BUT ... it doesn't seem to be "swelling" so I'm nervous about using)
Safale US-05
Craft Series M44 West Coast

----

This is only my second attempt at brewing.

Do you mean Wyeast 1056?

If so, that or the US-05 would work fine.

I've never tried the M44 someone else may have

Edit: just read up on the M44 and that would also work fine. If you don't plan on making a starter, I may try the US-05 first.

Yes, 1056. I edited my post.

The wyeast package says it should be good even if it doesn't swell but I ordered it without an icepack so I'm not sure about it.

Should I try it or just go with the US-05 (which seems pretty popular for IPA)

Chances are some of the yeast is still good but I would make a starter if I had time. Sounds like you smacked it and no activity. If you want to brew today, you could take a chance that you'd have a fermentation but it might take a while to get going. You could also pitch 1/2 of the US-05 with it if you really think some of the yeast crapped out on you since it's essentially the same yeast.
