Who gets freebies from work? And I don't mean office supplies. I'm talking meals, hotel stays, trips, whatever. I work in radio, and contrary to popular belief, unless you work in one of the major markets, freebies are few and far between. But when they come along, they tend to be pretty decent.

For about 5 years, as a St. Louis Cardinal affiliate, I've been put up in a great hotel right across from the ballpark, fed, boozed, and taken down on the field and treated to two free games each year for affiliates days. That ended about 4 years ago...

Changing jobs 2 and a half years ago, things have been pretty thin... until recently... I get to go backstage with Alice Cooper on October 5th when he comes to town, and that'll be :rockin:

And tonight was another good time which got me thinking about all this...

The local A/B distributor just opened up a new facility, so all the media types and assorted friends and drunkards were invited. They had a band, awesome BBQ, and the Clydesdales were up from STL. I got to see some old aquaintances and say hi, yadda, yadda, yadda. What I was really concentrating on was seeing what they were offering in BEER...

2 Trailers, with the usual, Bud, Bud Light, Select, Mich Ultra... But each one had a wildcard... One had 312, the other had Goose Island's Honkers Ale.

The 312 was ok, the Honkers was really good.... I had only 1 Bud the entire time.

So as freebies went it was a good night. Which leads me to this addled post....

Do you get freebies from work? Is alcohol ever a freebie unless it's Christmastime? Post your freebies. LOL

(sorry for the long ramble, the Honkers was REALLY good on tap... :drunk: )

I have friends who have worked in banking as well. They don't give you guys SH#&. That sucks for having to put up with people who don't have a clue how to fill out a deposit slip... You guys DESERVE freebies... Lord knows they aren't giving you free CASH....

Free firewood? Now THAT I would take... if they do what they're saying they're gonna do to utility costs this year, my fireplace is gonna get a workout....

I work for an airline... so my family gets free flights, and my wife and I get big discounts on vacations and resorts. Great perks, but it seems like I am working so much that we never get the chance to really put them to great use. The only other perk, the first class meals! YUMMMMMMM

I manage the chachki's for my company, so i get a lot of freebies. And I get to travel every now and then. I'm going to Dallas on Tuesday. On top of that, I get the occasional ticket to the corporate box at Wrigley and United Center (Bulls & Blackhawks).

We TRY to get about 10 days in the summer to head out of the country, but planning is always a pain. When you spend 4 days a week flying, the LAST thing you want to do is go flying, again... lol

That's cool. :rockin: However I did run into one weasel I used to work with. m/f tonight made a point of bragging about how he was going to be in the Distributors box seats at the new Busch on Monday... I felt he needed a punch to the forehead....

Tempting but I didn't.....

LOL I can totally understand that... but if sandy beaches are an option, I'd be jamming a 2 yr old in the overhead if need be... :D

I work for the Gov't so it's illegal for me to get any perquisites or take any from contractors I work with, including drinks or meals.

Lately they've allowed our frequent flyer miles to belong to us since much of our travel is on our own time, but I saw through that ploy from the beginning...we were only allowed to get those because the people in Congress wanted to use theirs...get it?

Of course, I have lived overseas for free (Germany for 9 years) and to go to exotic places like combat zones...:D

The gubmint just paid me to drive my truck halfway across the country. That is, my 4X4 with a V10. One of the few times I smile while filling the damn thing up. BTW, she'll run 90mph all day long, but that really plays hell with the MPG. ;)

I work for the local cable company. I get free cable and internet, company vehicle ( no fuel expenses here!), and free uniforms. I'll never have to buy jeans again until I retire ! I know it isn't much, but I'm happy with it.

Excellent! I figure any and all freebies that come your way thru work, or associations thru work are justified unless you are receiving them illegally. You've put in your time, and for many of us OUR time, and that little extra bump can be a nice thing. Free cable or gas when they've relocated you, at the cost of both of those these days, I'd definitely take em'.

Bill, the combat zones remark reminded me of the old joke, "Join the Army and see the world! Or, what's left of it!" ;) My step-dad is retired Army and they lived in Stuttgart for 4 years. They got to travel a LOT and mom got to see a lot of places she wouldn't have been able to see otherwise. They both work for the Gov't now.

Semiconductor company. I get to keep points (mostlt american airlines and marriot) and things for when I travel and the company pays for it. Flying the gf out to germany while I'll be there for work on points.
Sort of indirect freebies.

i work for a rental car in the suburban market.. i get a company car (basically what ever car is left over each night), gas, and insurance. i can also gas the car up at any airport if i'm on vacation.

i guess it could be considered a freebie, but i log sixty hours and get a check for forty..

I work at a game company. I get a lot of marketing swag, Posters, tshirts, free games, opportunities to buy consoles at special price points, cheap video cards.

Oh yeah, it's those extra hours you put in that to me at least justify the freebies. But the extra hours are still a PITA... It's like a remote broadcast in radio. If an advertiser buys it, the jock usually gets paid to do it. However, if it's a station event, (like the car show I have to work 5 to 9 tonight) you work it, no extra $. But it comes with the gig.... :(

No, shi...I mean "bigger than Stuttgart!" I've been there too. I lived in Augsburg '75-'79 and Bamberg from '99-'04.

Been to many places I've only read about...I know the feeling.:D

EDIT: We used to say "Join the Army for FTA!" (Fun, Travel and Adventure - somewhere along the way it turns into F-asterick-CK The Army...). Another saying was "Join the Army, See the world, Meet interesting people...and KILL them!... Another, "My business is Killing...and Business is GOOD!!!...

Can't say those things anymore...WUSSES!!!

I work for a soils engineering company and drive all over Southern California. Work is paying for my '04 Ford F-150 Supercrew 4x4 and all the gas to fill it. At about 14 miles a gallon and hundreds of miles a week, not to mention gas still being $2.60-$3.00 a gallon depending on the area, not a bad deal I say.

I work in the oil industry, so I get all the west-Texas crude I can drink at the beginning of every month. Plus, free planet raping.

Now THOSE are freebies... :p Thanks for helping me shoot beer thru my nose on a Saturday night. :drunk:

:D
