Well now I'm curious: are you guys not fans of the chocolate/chile combo (like Abraxas, Malevolence, etc), or do you feel that New Belgium Cocoa Mole is just a particularly nasty example of the category?

If it's the latter, then I'm bummed, because I bought three of the ******' things based on the fact that I like Abraxas & Malevolence.

Pro-Tip: don't buy 3 of something you haven't had before.

So who else is going to Night / Day of the Living Ales this year at Bottom Lounge?

Tickets just sold out for the afternoon session, but still some available for the evening (where you can hang out with / go fetch me beers). Also the LT will be volunteering all day if you want to give him **** (which I highly recommend).

I'm on the fence. But the fest has been one of the more disappointing ones in Chicago's rotation for the last few years for what it costs. I was actually amazed that the afternoon tickets lasted so long (Usually CBS eats them up on their own right out of the gate).

The new venue is intriguing.. and I work in the morning doing maintenance so I'll already be in the city should we spring for the evening session.

Still again, that fest just hasn't been all that interesting of late.

I really enjoyed the barrel aged hunter variants (just don't tell CCBE) and the sneak peak of Prop 13 at Living Ales a couple of years back, but last year was a bit disappointing in terms of the overall lineup. Having said that you know you'll have a good time if you drop the coin.

I would like if every brewery entered at least one "traditional" style / interpretation of cask and one "experimental" where they can infuse it with whatever makes them happy, but I don't see that happening any time soon.

Yeah, not my smartest move. I wished I bought three Malevolences instead of just one, and I think I projected that onto Cocoa Mole. If I end up not liking this stuff, I might line the bottles up front & center on my beer shelf until the lesson sinks in.

Great, I just okayed my personal best box ever to ship from the east coast Wed to arrive here Friday! Fingers crossed :)

I need to look at a national weather map somewhere, because nyc and some random cities in between (e.g., Cleveland) aren't showing the low teens/single digits like us.

Aaaaand, I just put the hold on this, after hearing the forecast on the radio this morning.

I doubt anyone cares, I'm just taking a turtle's pace to get to 100 posts, so I can get in Make-A-Wish!

Pipeworks' End of Days is good for spiced/spicy stouts and they seem to brew it with some regularity.

I put a hold on a box of SARA saisons coming my way on Monday morning. It would have been hitting our area right when temps were well below zero. Definitely couldn't chance something like that. Last year I did have a box of 6 RR Beats survive subzero temps last year. 3 of them were slushies though. I had a 12 bottle styroshipper of all sorts of styles of 750s actually survive over a weekend because it snowed that Saturday and FedEx didn't deliver. That was risky but the styroshipper combined with the large format kept them all safe from freezing.

This is very, very loosely beer based but figured somebody on here might be a Big Ten alum or a basketball fan as well as liking pizza and a free drink. I'm not driving in from St Charles on a Tuesday night for this especially if I want to hit one of the days of actual basketball but the local Chicago guys might be interested.

Paczki Walez
There were more than a dozen people lined up outside Orland Park Bakery by 5 a.m. Tuesday, hungrily eyeing rack after rack of paczki -- rich, flavorful pastries the bakery sells between Fat Tuesday and Easter.

“We’re just trying to beat the rush,” said Dennis Gutka, 70, of Homer Glen, who said his wife sent him to pick up their annual paczki order to share with grandchildren. He arrived around 4:30 a.m. and was second in line, but said it was worth braving the cold and the early wake-up.
I wonder if they had a dessert share in line while waiting.

These are some legit paczki, but this is ******* nuts considering this bakery makes them all Lent long and you can pre-order them.

I actually liked that beer

I think I just underestimated the heat of the habenero. It's my own fault...had I known what I was getting into, I probably would have been better prepared. Couldn't get over the first few sips and the shock of the heat. Just not my bag, though.

I've never read this before, but it was excellent. I particularly liked the Lilith Fair butch taint reference that had me hocking into the garbage can. Vivid!
One of my favorite lines from anywhere, all time.

About 15 folks hit up Penrose at 1PM today for those VIP tickets. No clue how many they are selling but it was easy peasy for locals. My guess is that they'll have them all day. You could buy at least two. I didn't know that or I would have offered to pick it up for someone. I assumed just one ticket per person. Just in case anyone was wondering I figured I'd give the update.

See you there. Lognar was kind enough to grab me one while he was getting his.

Just tweeted that they sold out.

Old people will do anything to be able to brag about how they beat the rush/line somewhere.

Anything.
