"Guys! Other people were doing it too!"

He doesn't feel he did anything wrong but writes a ******* novel explaining his actions. Make sense.

After so generously splitting it up, he ended up with four of Vanilla and Prop and two four packs each of barleywine and coffee. Then goes back to his original place in line at Vav's and waits in 15 degree temps for seven more hours to buy more? I would ask what his ******* problem was but this is the guy who dropped thousands on BA Vanilla Shake at $30ish a bottle.

"Investment" Banking industry...specifically Beer Futures

My first experience with the guy was at the Cthulhu release. Him and his wife(?) just jumped in line in front us for their 2nd round of bottles and he couldn't help but brag about it to the people around him and mention how much they'll be worth.

I can assure you fedora specifically wanted me to know that lady was NOT his wife.

I certainly wasn't trying to hit a nerve with money. I think most people that get wrapped up in this hobby have some money. I certainly have a good job and can pony up a good deal for beer. But I know others who can do as such even moreso. Clearly EVERYONE isn't in that boat. People you see in that group out at every single bar event, tapping, etc and hunting down every single release of beer (and as many as possible).. clearly something doesn't add up is all I was saying.

I'm guessing Penrose isn't releasing allocations since it's their first release. They don't know who is showing up. If 50 people show up, then you could probably get 3 or 4 of each. If 150 people show, then you're looking at 1 to 2. I wouldn't travel very far thinking I'd get more than 1 per person at this point. They've been getting plenty of press from the Trib, Reader, GBH, and bottleshops around Chicagoland. That combined with it being the first 375 mL wild ale release means I'd think 100 or so folks will show up by 11. The weather will dictate the crowd I'd say.

I wouldn't hold out for a reserve society. They have investor backing. TK doesn't want to be beholden to any group to release a beer until he thinks it's ready or whether or not to release a beer at all. I've never got the impression from either of them that they like the society model.

I'll be at this release as I enjoyed these @ FoBAB (though 3 @ GTWM was pretty meh / young). I also live in Aurora though and any disappointment due to some sort of 18th Street style Sunday morning stout line around the block type of affair wouldn't be all that crushing.

I think you also have a ton of irresponsible people in this hobby that are just lemming consumers. They spend too much money on too many beers that don't get drunk half the time and are then traded away which lead to more costs most of the time.

As much as we joke about Chicago being ****** (even though it is), at least we're not alone. There were about 400 bottles of Eclipse Masterpiece being sold at the party last night at $45 with no limit and the first 20 people or so apparently bought it all. Woof.

Olde Western Avenue is a hipsters paradise. I once listened to some ****** in flannel telling his friend how great the gentrification has been for the neighborhood and how Blue Island will go through a renaissance because of it.

Srs.

Maple Tree, Rock Island Public House, and Shimmy's soon to be up and running Blue Island Beer Company sadly might push the bros into the area sooner rather than later.

Yeesh! Average of about $900/person for a single beer.

This exactly. I'd say RIPH is my favorite bar in the area and is so ******* relaxed and low key on most nights. It would be sad if that changed for the worse.

Shimkos is still alive???? I thought he was still wasting away in the depths of HofBrau House. What ever happened to Clamp and Gasket and why the change to Blue Island Beer Co?

he was with ale syndicate for a minute

Jeg can honestly go **** himself. Him and bunch of people ruined an entire stores release. End of story. The worst part is the nerve to say my only regret was not inviting another friend to buy even more. I'll take having morals over having cases of beer any day.

Him and a long time Flossmoor regular (a guy I've known all the way back to when I was a busser and barback in High School) decided to forego the big money and do everything themselves. Some of their tanks were delivered just this week. Exciting times.

I can't link to it directly.. but you can see some pictures on the "City of Blue Island Illinois"s Facebook Page.

And yes, I was surprised Blue Island had a facebook page too.

my only problem with going to suburban beer bars is transit. i have a car, but i refuse to drive when i'm even remotely within a hair of buzzed, which would make the opportunity cost of a trip to such a place pretty high. and metra is great for commuting, but terrible for anything but that.

My place is totally train accessible, doesn't advertise any special tappings (and seems to not update beermenus when they do get something good), totally chill, family oriented atmosphere, and just a great place overall. Two or three years ago, I'd argue they were one of the 3 or 4 the best beer bars in the area but the glut of new places seems to have made their list not quite as spectacular on any given day. Still okay with that, though I do miss the days of Parabola, Sucaba, and Brandy Angel's Share on tap all at once for a week or so...

Real talk, the one time I went out to that Hofbrau haus, I had a couple really good german beers.

I remember you telling me that a while ago. For how good of a brewer he is I can't figure out why he hadn't been able to latch on somewhere for long term before now. Is he a giant prick or something? Alum?

Sounds like Whole Foods had a whopping 2 cases each of Prop and Vanilla this morning. People apparently got in line at 3am.

Everything is terrible.

I walked by at 8:30 this morning and there were more than 4 cases worth of people lined up outside, 30 minutes after they were supposed to start selling.

Still don't understand where all the beer is.

Shimkos is a great guy.

He was at Hoffbrau. Then he went to Ale Syndicate doing some consulting largely (Which is actually where I hear Richard Grant is now). Then he finally found a way to get his project up and running (in fact, the other guy is in the band that always did events at Flossmoor called "Nic Jones All Stars").

I just think it's pretty hard to get up and running. A lot harder than some of us may realize. Coupled with the fact that a lot of brewers KNEW he was still pretty serious about his own project.. perhaps that made him look like more of a short term hire to them?

I have to wonder if InBev isn't staggering the release this year. As much as I hate "the hunt" I'm going to keep checking smaller stores at random over the next two months or so. While they were clearing old stock out of their barrel warehouse, they seemed to be releasing a case at a time to stores, completely at random. Remember how 2010 Night Stalker kept popping up everywhere over the summer?

What a pathetic attempt to justify his own actions. Everyone buying by the case there was clearly taking advantage of the situation and knew it. And to accuse everyone else of just being jealous is ridicoulus...

Pretty much these. He's been ******** it up for long enough to know he was buying more than they would have given him had he showed up at noon. Plain and simple. It's not really an issue of "they let him so he technically didn't do anything wrong". It's really just about having a shred of common courtesy and not ******* over people who wait in a line for hours to get a few bottles.

And the jealousy thing is completely asinine. Just because the majority of the twats On CCBE behave this way doesn't mean everyone does.

The fact that he even had to write a response tells us everything.

I'm not sure I mentioned this to everyone (or if everyone already knew, etc) but Nick Barron left Goose Island the week after FoBAB.

He moved down to Arkansas with his wife. No brewing job (though I believe she is a doctor of sorts and she completed her work rotation or something and got assigned there - hence the move) as of yet.

Clybourn goes through brewers almost as fast Flossmoor now.

I'm not defending anyone, and I have no idea what happened, but as a hypothetical -- if you knew there was a store selling cases of variants under possibly shady circumstances to other people, would you go buy cases for yourself? I'm not sure I wouldn't. Like I said I don't know the circumstances, which could obviously change the answer.

I have no dog in this fight, but I think it's an interesting question.

I picked the old standard of a duel because, like in the late 17/early 1800s, most people involved will almost be too fat to walk the 20 paces required...much less run around with bows and arrows and ****.
yeah but survival of the fittest...
