The recipe for my cream ale called for 8 ounces of carapils. The HBS was out of carapils so I picked up a bag of caramalt. Are these the same malts?

No but you could get by maybe with some light cara(crisp uk)-is that what you have?Still different. But a good option. It will impart some sweetness/malt character/color whereas caripils wont. I subb barley flakes-you could get some chill haze though using flaked adjuncts. Not shure if cream ales are "crystal clear" or not though. A small amount of flaked wheat would work also. The caramalt will still make you a good beer just not specific to the recipe.
