I get the reason why this thread exists. I honestly completely do. I think you are more likely to get a horrified look in this country if you say "me, no I'm not a dad I don't want kids" than if you said "I did some time in jail when I was younger."

Hence my post. It's personal preference... what @kombat was looking for was like-minded individuals to talk about how cool it is not to have kids. What he got was everyone's opinion, kids or no.

When conversation turns to this, I head off the "you're a selfish person" comment. I just say "I'm a selfish person by default, I like to do whatever I want whenever I want to do it and not having to hire a baby sitter". I try to keep it light hearted and add that having someone elses poop on my hands horrifies me to no end. Even though I don't think theres anything inherently more selfish of me not having kids vs. someone else having kids.

Cheezydemon of all people accused someone of this a while back, and I was stunned. One of the more interesting and funny people here went off on, headbanger I think it was, for "living his selfish life while we go on perpetuating the species." I was stunned.

That's the second time in this thread you've called me out on it. I let the first one go, and I know I shouldn't feed the troll, but what can I say, I'm weak.

I do not believe my posts are "hate filled." I don't hate anybody or anything. I simply cannot understand the attraction to having children. In my opinion, the negatives far outweigh the positives. But I'm not so egocentric as to presume that my opinion is law. I understand people value different things. Last year I spent my birthday in Las Vegas with a dozen friends. I raced a Lamgorghini Gallardo on a racetrack, then went a shot a bunch of machine guns, then had a $200 dinner at a fancy restaurant with obscure craft beers. Then we partied at Club Surrender until 3:00 am, buying table service and $800 bottles of vodka. I had a blast, I'll always remember it, it was incredibly fun. I turned 39.

As for "getting a place to rant," you bet I did - because I created this thread. You smacked me down for intruding on other "yay kids" threads with my counterpoint, so I instead chose to create a thread dedicated to those like-minded child-free individuals and families. Nevertheless, the pro-kiddie crowd has peppered this thread with lots of reasons why kids are great. While I of course welcome all opinions and I don't mean to imply their posts are unwelcome, I cannot help but notice that when I similarly posted opposing viewpoints in their threads, people like you shouted me down and called me a hater.

So if I'm not allowed to be anti-kid in their threads, and I'm not even allowed to rant in my own thread, should I just assume you would prefer I keep my mouth shut altogether, Your Highness?

If someone says you are selfish for not wanting to have kids, ask them why they do.

Invariably, you get an answer like "so someone will be there for me/take care of me when I'm old" or "to pass along my bloodline/name/genes." Then you can tell them that therein, that's a selfish reason to have kids.

We're all selfish. Some are just afraid to admit it while others are not.
