I visited a house during a hot summer's day and it was pretty cool
The architect was truly a genius and nobody's fool
In winter time the house stayed toasty and warm
Very cozy and dry even during a snow storm
The year of the build I'm not to sure of
But probably 2 to 4X older than all of us here gov
Another wonder of this house were the hidden banks
Not like he had Wells Fargo safes stashed under the planks (almost not)
As far as I can remember there was no electricity
Then again man my memory is not serendipity
Definitely not modern central air conditioning or heat
But truly my friend this house was real neat
There are probably a few things I forgot
And is this truly a riddle? Probably not
If you've been to this house you'll definitely know
How it was cooled in summer and warmed in the snow
Anybody knows the name of this house no rhyming answer needed
But you do know rhyming riddles and answers on this thread were plead'n
(Please don't let this history question; more than a riddle end this thread. Somebody out there might know the answers or not. Either way don't let this thread stop - we'll move on before that happens)

This house is alright, quite outta sight, and was designed by Mr. Frank Loyd Wright.
It's built over a creek & was named tongue in cheek, it's the coolest house you'll see all week.
On days when it's hotter, you can play like an otter in the house that's named "Falling Water."

No, the house I'm thinking of is not a fair riddle.
I tried to find it with Google today while playing my fiddle
Let me tell you all a little more about my dilemma
Maybe it would help me if I sat in a cinema
(No point to the last two lines except they might of rhymed)
Pretty sure but I could be wrong
The house comes from the state of the Illini strong
The builder's wife lived with an agonizing plight
She was sickly and dying like a plant suffers blight
It's late and my mind and body are tired
Had a few beers after work with some folks I admired
But I gotta go now time to stay up has sleep expired
So I'll see you all a little later
We'll talk more then, alligators

I thought about asking my brothers maybe childhood memories they had
It would be an easy answer for my dear late dad

My 1st guess was good, though it was quite wrong, I guess I'll have to change my song.
Some of the clues you've given are tough, I must use my thinking cap, sho-nuff.
Perhaps the age of this house is a clue, a place to keep things cool for you.
Before the icebox was a common thing, people built houses over their spring.
They kept things cool & often didn't freeze, the spring house is something at which you shouldn't sneeze.
My guess is a spring house, what say you, Sir Dan? Did I get it wrong, or am I truly "Da man?"

I apologize but I have to go out of rhyme line this time but will be back and it will be so sublime (what?!)

The house you describe is like the one I'm thinking about in regards to nature providing temperature control
Three distinct aspects of this house I remember
1) the house was cooled during summer by earth cooled air conditioning. Plenty on the internet about the concept but just remember he probably did the digging without any modern tunneling tools and I want to say this house is from the 19th century. I could very well be wrong about that

(Now truly an hour or so later; I didn't lose my draft just came back to it)
Oldest brother, the historian - no answer
Little sister (who I'm one of three brothers) - no answer
Little brother the Doc. He came up with the answer the house on the Rocks.
I love him, but thinking his memory is stinking bad. ( he was like 9-10 in 76)
Which does maybe give me a timeline for this history addiction fix

He could watch the fire hearth glow
By a kind of sight glass he succeeded
It showed him when fuel was needed

Sorry not to be clear. It's that darn house. Maybe my brother was correct and its The House on the Rocks, in Wisconsin.
Everybody please feel free to start a new riddle. This one I'm afraid won't be answered unless first hand knowledge of the house and then the clues make sense.
