My name is Amy, and I'm a beer snob.
I wasn't always a beer snob.
My previous experience (ahh the folly of youth) with beer was the likes of Strohs (aka "shorts"), Corona, and Rolling Rock
I have a former boyfriend to thank for my introduction to real beer.
He was a fan of Chimay and Hoegaarden.
First it was Hoegaarden...
mmmmm this isn't like that other stuff.
Drink with a slice of orange? ooooh that IS tasty.
Then Chimay (first red, then blue) ...
ahhhhh this is kind of sweet and smells really good, and the carbonation dances on my tongue and I don't need to stuff my face full of chips and dip to make me want to drink it.
Some number of years later, the boyfriend is long gone but the love of good beer remains. I'm a big fan of Belgian style ales, but I also will try microbrew IPAs, wheat beers, anything with a good nose, decent carbonation, that doesn't require a quart of water to wash it down.
Having a number of geeky hobbies already, being a decent cook (and having decades of experience in making my own bread / keeping sourdough cultures around) and knowing a few friends who brew their own mead, I figured that homebrewing might be another fun experiement.
I'm a total noob at this point, my first batch is doin it's thing in a 6 gal. carboy (the Twisted Enkel extract kit from NB), but I have great plans for many more batches in the future.
However, I'm going to give this batch time to blossom, and then bottle and wait some more.
So far this site has been a good resource, and inspiration for future projects.
Mmmmm beer!

Welcome to the fold, You'll be hooked before you know it. I started 15 months ago and now I have a kegging system and a couple hundred lbs of grain in the closet. This by far the most addictive hobby I have ever had.

Great to have another woman here. Definitely more women showing up at the brewing clubs, compared to 5 years ago. I think the craft beer revolution is finally cutting through the swill-guzzling fratboy image. Had a mother/daughter team show up at the last OBC meeting, growler in hand.

Welcome to the passion! In brewing gender means nothing. But as a male, I like to see that brewing is crossing the gender barrier steadily.

Cheers and may your next batch be the best beer you have ever had!
:mug:

Welcome! When your beer comes out great, make sure you let that old boyfriend know that you've far surpassed him in beer knowledge!

I agree! I brew some decant beer but I would be willing to bet that no one could taste it and say "a female brewed this!" or "a male brewed this!" Some of the best brewers and cooks in the world are women. By the same token, some of the best brewers and cooks in the world are men!

I woman beer snob... I think I am in love! Welcome to the insantity that is brewing. You will soon find yourself completely addicted and anxious to try brewing every style known. And even some that aren't! This forum is awesome to learn more than you ever thought possible! Welcome Mermaid! :mug:

Welcome Mermaid. Your obsession with brewing will ovetake you before you realize it. Good hobby to have now that the Bruins are out of the playoffs. Hate to say it, but I was a Phillies fan for that last game, but only because Pittsburgh got bounced out too.

Good luck with your brews.

Salute! :mug:

LIES.

There are no women on the Internet.

:)

Welcome aboard!

I suspect KFH is correct...

Welcome!!!!

I think women who brew are the hottest women of all!

:mug:

but I know Revvy is correct! :D

Welcome aboard mermaid Amy! This truly is a fantastic hobby for anyone who considers themselves a foodie or is prone to foodieism! Did I just create a new word? Anyhoo there's a wealth of knowledge here and folks like Revvy, David, Yooper, and more make this a great place.

Schlante,
Phillip

Welcome aboard and have fun! We need more Yoopers on this board dropping MAD knowledge. You'll soon see half of your searches end with Yoop leading you in the right direction!

I wish i had claimed to be a woman when i made my introductory post. I would have had a lot more responses!

It's good here, innit! :)

Hi Mermaid, welcome. Always nice to meet a beer snob, like myself :rockin:

I agree! I brew some decant beer but I would be willing to bet that no one could taste it and say "a female brewed this!" or "a male brewed this!" Some of the best brewers and cooks in the world are women. By the same token, some of the best brewers and cooks in the world are men!

YooperBrew, I know in traditional Finnish culture, for example, the women would brew Sahti olutta, and were the best at making it. I haven't had an opportunity to try traditionally made Sahti (nor have I attempted a batch yet), but hope to try both and attempt my own batch. A store up in Houghton sells a Finnish beer, but sadly not a Sahti. Think they have just a porter.

If I hadn't actually seen a couple of women brewing beer, I never would have thought it possible either. (Although come to think of it, I have never actually SEEN Yooperbrew brew beer before...)

But anyway, I did see Rachael brew up a batch a few weeks ago and her friend Sarah too. So, there ya go, guys.

Seriously, welcome! And if you have any pointers for sourdough, a have a friend who wants to try making it again. His first attempt turned out pretty bad.

Welcome to the obsession. I'm from Revere MA. There are lots of people from Mass here on this forum. Who knew there were so many homebrewers in our backyard. When I started, I was the only one that I knew of that homebrewed. I have since hooked a few friends and coworkers. The more the merrier... welcome.
