I put random liquids made from various ingredients with differing sugar contents along with a specific yeast strain into a vessel and attempt to maintain a constant environment for said yeasts until which time a stable liquid gravity can be achieved.

not sure what that makes me......

I recently decided to start referring to myself as a classically inspired contemporary wortster and yeast cuisine specialist.

I then, more recently, decided never to call myself by such a foolish name again.

I don't know.... It doesn't really matter if you make beer at your house or a commercial brewery. If you brew it you are a brewer. I don't see the need for a distinction. Unless you are going to say one is clearly superior to the other.....;)

IMO, homebrewing is clearly superior to commercial brewing.

When I think of "artisan" products, I think of products that are pretentious, over-priced, and generally poorly made. Coincidentally, that's been my experience with "artisan" beers.

Most homebrewers I know care deeply about their product and are constantly striving to improve their brewing process or to try out new ingredients. I'd so much rather people call me a homebrewer than some hipster "artisan" ********* label.

I agree!! But....if you were say to a commercial brewer that his beer tastes just like "homebrew" would he be happy or a bit irritated? My bet is that he/she would NOT take it as a compliment to their brewing skill/beer.

Notice how I call them "commercial" brewers and not "professional"?

Obsessed, maybe? :D

I prefer the term craft brewer. Although on my CV I call myself a home brewer.

I prefer craft because that is what I have started to do, craft beer. Or I simply brew beer at home, like I roast coffee at home or bale bread at home or grow veggies...

Although as a silly title:

A fermentables sugar extractor, single cell fungi cultivator and bitter flower blender.

My name is Yooper, and I'm a homebrewer.

:rockin:

I love homebrew. I drink homebrew. I talk about homebrew. I moderate a forum about homebrew.

And, I'll be darn- right now I'm drinking a homebrew!

I have no problem with the term, obviously!

You know what I would like to see....a beer competition where ANYONE can enter!! It didn't matter if you are a "homebrewer" using basic equipment or a "pro brewer" using advanced equipment. Enter your beer and see who has the better beer. I think it is silly that pros can't enter the NHC and that "homebrewers" can't enter the GABF. Or at least take the winners in the NHC and put them up against the best at the GABF.

Guess I'm lazy. I don't have anything against the term but simply say that I brew. I ask people if they brew and ask if they want one of my beers.

Brewing is as brewing does. I'm proud to be a home brewer. I get into interesting conversations sometimes. I accept that they go from the sublime to the ridiculous. That's part of the fun...:tank:

I can see I'm barking up the wrong age group of brewers. How quickly we foerget or never knew. "homebrewing" was a very derogatory term before Papazian. The term implied swill and squalor. Only the lowest made homebrew. I was among the lowest then. But now, I am above that all. I hate the term " homebrew". You all are just too young to grasp the implications. Cheers

No, not really.

Your friends (like me!) are mostly just giving you ****. :D

I need to drive over to your place and park my Jeep with the HM BREW license plate outside your house and drink all your beer. We'd have a great time!

Well, as one of the oldsters in the hbt population, I still gotta ask: in what third world squalor have you been living and observing such putrid brewing conditions?

Fort Smith?

Cheers! ;)

Or you're too old to grasp change. WE determine the meaning of words as we currently speak them. There are plenty of terms from the "good old days" that were perfectly normal and are now seen as offensive or associated with negative aspects.

Um, I'm no spring chicken. How old are you? And even if the term may have been derogatory in the past, things change.

If memory serves, he just turned 74 on Saturday. (I sent belated birthday wishes, so I think I'm right- but I"m getting older too and my memory is like a sieve!)

Hmmmm... using language (one term instead of another) in order to differentiate a person, place or thing (or action) with a negative connotation from that same thing or action with a positive or neutral connotation...

Is sudbuster suggesting a more politically correct moniker for our fair hobby?

I'm be 65 in a couple of weeks, and to tell the truth I don't remember anyone even using the term homebrew when I was growing up. Some folks just made their own beer - and some folks canned their own vegetables, and some folks baked their own bread. Apparently I was lucky to not grow up around snobs who looked down their noses at such goings-on....

But let's stipulate that homebrew was an insult in the past, at least in some circles. So what? If it was, the world has changed. Maybe it's time you caught up with the changes, instead of trying to drag us back into your past....

You're on a homebrew talk forum, populated by people who homebrew, and it's full of ads from homebrew stores for homebrewing equipment and homebrewing supplies. I'd bet good money you're the only one here who considers the term an insult...;)
