Allagash Tour : Portland, ME

The Sebago Brewpub is a great place...but I did just pick up a sixer of Slick Nick and was not impressed.

I'm not a fan of it either. I almost always drink the Fryes Leap IPA. I like the Local harvest too.

Last year we did a day of it and did Allagash, Geary (which is almost next door) and then the Tuesday night tour at Shipyard. Allagash is set up really well for the tours. They have a nice bar there where you can wait for the tour to start, DL Geary isn't really set up for it but very relaxed and the tour was given by a brewer. As for Shipyard, make your resevations for Tuesday night tour. It takes about an hour and goes all through the brewery. The regular tour lasts about 5 mins and you can see the bottling machine from 500 feet away, plus the tour is given by a brewer.

For those of you who can go, the 'new' Allagash is open. It is awesome and HUGE! (and about a 20 min bike ride from my house

as are Geary's and Gritty's as well as all the other Shipyard off-shoots (Seadog, etc.).

Don't get me wrong, a Geary's HSA is a standard for me, but honestly the English-style Ale category is definitely over-done in the Portland area...with the exception of Allagash and Sebago, only recently has the Portland beer scene gotten more depth (Maine beer co., Rising Tide, In'finiti)
