I miss old school candy shops. Growing up I remember the 'penny candy' shops...

Dude.. yep. Grandma would take me to the store every Saturday morning, I'd pick out what I wanted and take something home to share with grandpa while we built stuff in his basement woodshop. Some of my most cherished memories.

Our candy shop still exists, and it hasn't changed a bit. Might have to take wife there this weekend, she's never been..

My old candy store is still there, except now its a crack den.
Memories.

@TheMadKing good luck today!
@BrewinHooligan nice work man! Sweet sweet upgrades galore!
On topic of candy, I like Good and Plenty. I don't know why, it is kind of nasty.

Coffee. No pic from Wednesday because Wednesday consisted of 11 hours of Netflix and me in bed. Anyone watch Bates Motel? I just polished off the third season in a day.

I'd be in bed now if the fence guys weren't here to extend my fence and my work wasn't piling up. Apparently I have something called DISH in my back which has pulled ligaments or trapped a nerve....I'll find out more Monday. The pain has been so bad I felt like I was about to pass out a couple of times yesterday and once today in the shower. TMI, I know. The upside is I haven't eaten anything since about 7 pm Tuesday.

I may drink tonight, maybe that will help with the pain. Motrin sure isn't.

tl;dr I'm whiny.

OK, I haven't started doing the math yet but do I have enough space in my 10 gal Igloo mash tun to do this, after factoring in proper water volumes? It is 16.5 lbs. of grain. I have to look back at my brew notes, but it seems to me that I noted that I couldn't get much more into that tun when I brewed something smaller in the past.

I miss old school candy shops. Growing up I remember the 'penny candy' shops...remnants of the 60's and 70's. Nothing was a penny at all, but they had all this obscure candy that's damn near impossible to find now. I mean, I could order those foam like UFO's with candy pellets from China now, but its not the same as walking to the store on a summer Saturday morning with a dollar to buy bulk candy.

Grew up with this. The best part of visiting my Grandparents was the two block walk to one of the stores.

Man... bitter chocolate covered orange rinds was a personal favorite.

I think I've seen 21 lbs go in but it was a beer that was about 1.055 or something. Not sure if that matters.

I don't recall the most I've done. It wasn't 20 though.

I got more than 20# of grain in mine with plenty of room for a standard water volume this weekend.

That's awesome - do they have a soda fountain too?

I know it used to drive mom & dad crazy waiting while us kids spent forever trying to see how to use our money to maximize the sugar intake.

Sorry you're in such pain. Hope the doctor visit on Monday goes well and they can get you back to normal in no time.

Wow...it says 6.67 gallons of displacement. Seems like smaller beers I've brewed have been way closer to the top of that Igloo than that. Also, I just realized that only 4.25 gallons made it into the bottles in that recipe, so I may kick up the volumes a touch to get a full 5 gallons into the bottles.

They did at one time iirc. The biggest draw was their ice cream though. My god. If you didn't go in the morning, you knew it was because grandpa wanted to go get sundaes after dinner. I haven't been there in a while. The building is gorgeous.

We have La Kings here. Old Soda shop and they pull and package salt water taffy on about 100yr old machines. They throw fresh taffy too when they are running. Go there often when I am in Galveston.

It doesn't take your false bottom into account if you're using one.

Watching the candy shops on the boardwalk in Wildwood NJ is still a favorite. I try to buy up as much salt water taffy as I can while I'm there. they make for great extras when shipping out beer to peeps.
I don't think we have anything remotely close to as cool as La Kings, though. That place looks like the ultimate throw back.

The pictures you are posting of this place reminds me of something...

Very old school feel. Its on the strand. Pretty much baby 6th street. Bars, shops, candy. The buildings are made in the mid 1800's and survived the hurricane of 1900 and Ike. Cool place to visit also Murdochs which is a gift shop on the water.

The candy store in my hometown growing up just moved to a new location that is supposed to have this sort of feel to it. I want to go take a look at it. Very cool.

If I ever cruise out of Galveston I'll be sure to check it out. Old school architecture I can admire for hours. Probably my favorite art form...I mean I think the Brooklyn Bridge is the most beautiful piece of American architecture and an engineering marvel.

I picked the right day to oversleep and skip breakfast. Tons of leftover donuts for somebody's going away party. Bacon on a donut?

Donut mind if I do.

****, now that I've got the brewing bug again, I was thinking I'd also do something lighter for St. Patrick's day. But brewing this weekend and bottling doesn't leave much time for this to ferment. Even if I only left it in the fermenter for 7 days, that would leave it in bottles for 3 weeks. 7 day fermentation is probably what I did with my blonde the last time I brewed it, but that makes me nervous.
