IBU Discrepancy Between Recipe & Software

I bought an IPA kit and the recipe says the IBUs should be 65. I ran the recipe through BeerSmith and it is telling me 43. That's a vast difference. Curious if this happens to others and how to properly handle it. I really would like 60+ IBUs for my IPA

Keg Dispensing For 4th Of July Party

I plan on kegging for an outdoor 4th party. I live in Florida so it will be melting hot then. I've read a few different posts on here about kegging for parties and such. But wanted to pitch my set-up/scenario and see if anyone has any better suggestions or ideas. I don't plan on buying any new...

    Light Wheat Malt

Hello - I was given a Russian book about beer making. I am going to attempt to make a recipe from it. It's of course all written in Russian so some items get lost in translation. Anyways I'm doing a wheat beer. It lists "light wheat". I've been looking over the internet and not truly finding...

    Off Flavor - Powder Taste?

I recently brewed a batch of beer and it has a strong 'off flavor'. I can't easily describe it. It's not one of the common off flavors such as buttery or astringent. The best I can do is say powdery. Now, I've never stuck powder into my mouth, but I imagine if I dumped a small amount into my...

    Recipe Kits/Clones

Just curious how many of you that actually buy kits as opposed to creating your own recipe buy clones? Do clone kit recipes do it for you? I see clones all the time and they just don't interest me. Wondering what portion of homebrewers actually buy clones.

Yeast Dead - Suggestions On Different Yeast

OK here's the deal. I am (or was) making a Czech Pilsner. Pretty sure my yeast is dead. 52 hours an no activity. I could be wrong and I'm sure I will hear 'wait it out' but for the sake of this thread I am interested in other yeast options. Again to be clear, this is not a 'my batch isn't...

    Cold Crashing/Filtering Out Excess Hops

Sup peeps? I have a batch that has 6oz of dry hops in it. I routinely cold crash my beer. I have done so with this one. I'm on day 4 of cold crashing yet there is still plenty of hops floating around in the beer. I will go a few more days but at this point I'm not sure it will settle out...

    Maris Otter Substitute For Extract

I have an in-house brown ale all grain recipe I like to periodically brew. However this time around I'm converting to extract for personal purposes. Maris Otter is my base grain malt. I know Muntons makes a liquid Maris Otter. But I am unable to use that. I understand MO is unique, but...

    Dry Hop Critique Needed

Sup peeps - OK I have a kit I am getting ready to brew. But like usual I have to tweak. I'm using the kit as a base. With that said I'm looking for dry hop critiques here, not critiques on the actual kit/ingredients. Recipe is as follows: 9# Light Malt Extract 1.5# Crystal 15L 2oz...

    Decline Of The "Homebrewing Lifestyle"

I stumbled onto the article listed below. And it got my brain (what's left) working a bit. So I thought I would bring it up in this forum and see what ya' chaps thought...

    I Wanna Steal Your Recipe

Yep, just what the title says. I'm on a brewing frenzy and boiling 2-3 batches per week. It's great making your own, pulling from sites and ect. But I'm guessing recipes supplied here are even better. So I'm looking for the best of the best :) If you have a house recipe, a can't miss...

Dang It - Forgot My Late DME Addition. Advice Quickly Needed

OK I've read similar posts to this but none of them pertained to my situation or my question. Basically I forgot my late DME addition. I currently cooled my wort down to 105 degrees. I really prefer not to put it back on the heat again to start another boil and then throw the remaining...

Need Suggestions On Purchasing A Good Regulator

I currently have a regulator/set-up that doesn't exactly thrill me. It works but I know there is better. I have seen tons online but rather get opinions from the community. Looking for any suggestions on what you think is 'top tier'.

Clone Recipe Kits - Do You Buy Them?

OK so I'm curious to how many brewers actually buy recipe clone kits? I myself find them interesting but have only purchased 2 clone kits in the 7 years I have been brewing. Anyways please do the poll and let us know if you actually buy clone kits. Whether that is for learning purposes or...

3 Different Batch Ending With The Same FG

OK so I brewed 3 different batches. All extract. An IPA, Amber and Red Ale. I used Safale 05 on all three. The IPA and Red Ale fermented at 66-68 while the Amber fermented at 62-64. The OG for the IPA was 1.066 and the other two were at 1.060. All 3 had a final gravity reading of 1.020...

Hop Adjustment In West Coast Pale Ale

OK so I ordered a pale ale kit I found to be interesting. It calls for 6oz of dry hopping. I am on the side that thinks you can never dry hop with to much :) But now that I'm really looking at this kit I'm thinking I can really get the aroma I want with 4 ounces. I have OCD and can never...

Pale Ale Recipe / Dry Hopping Keg

OK so I am getting ready to brew a kit (recipe below) and I want to dry hop the keg to keep the aroma while I drink it. With that said I have 2 questions. Well really 1 question but with a "1a" and "1b". If you plan on dry hopping do you suggest skipping the traditional method in your...

Help With Hoppy Red Ale Clone

So I was in a restaurant and they were serving local beer. I ordered a red ale from Motorworks. I was a great beer however, it was not a traditional red ale. In fact it was so hoppy and fresh I thought the waitress made a mistake. But she didn't. I went to the brewer's website and below is...

    Crazy Cloudy Beer

I'm not new to brewing but new to doing extract batches. So pardon my ignorance on some subjects. I recently kegged a palmer extract kit for a hefe. It is murky as murky. Like basically mud water. It tastes great. That is a non-issue. But the look of the beer is, let's say, uh fugly...

    Headspace For Kegging

I'm sure this is somewhere in the forum but I am unable to find it. I just kegged up a batch and my keg was pretty darn full. I'm wondering what the general rule of thumb is for headspace? Right now I have about 3 fingers of space before I hit my lid. I'm guessing I have way too much beer...
