    Silicon tubing question

So a few days ago I brewed for the first time on my all grain setup and used my wort chiller that happens to have silicon tubing from 2 different manufacturers on it. After one run some of the tubing is stained and some of it isnt. Why would this happen? Are there some grades of silicon that...

    Boiling wort on wood surfaces..

I just finished my rims system and I built wooden tables for it. Does anyone have any issues with burning wooden surfaces doing a boil? I was thinking about finishing it with polyurethane or possibly some kind of marine finish...Was thinking about maybe just putting aluminum foil on the top as...

    Garden hose for chiller outflow?

Any reason not to use a garden hose for the exit side of the water on a counterflow chiller? I see some people are sticking with silicon for this and others using hoses. Is the heat really that big of an issue?

Could a chiller have a patent?

Hey all just wondering because I see a lot of DIY chillers and I see random homemade chillers selling on ebay all the time....I know that the forum isn't really a good place for legal advice but I'm just wondering if it would be possible for someone to get a patent for a simple chilling device...

    limited edition chugger pumps???

Is there any advantage to these or are they just chrome plated instead of regular painted? They have them on ebay but I figure they are just the same product with different paint..

    tiny switch for chugger pump

Do one of those little toggle switches really support the load draw from a chugger pump. These pumps are only drawing 2 amps correct? Not an electrician but I understand power handling. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something catastrophic. Would one of these do...

Best place to buy quality Quick Disconnects and other fittings.

shopping around for parts for my new build. Was wondering where the best place to buy fittings was? I am seeing bargain fittings has pretty good prices. I have no clue how the quality is. I was on Amazon and saw a bunch of really bad reviews on a lot of the stuff sold on there. Id like to avoid...

No sparge recirculating mash tun question.

What efficiencies are people achieving by doing a no sparge and just recirculating the wort. I'm assuming that constant recirculation is improving the efficiency versus just a simple stir here and there... I'm looking at setting up a manually controlled recirculation mash tun and eventually...

Going all grain...need some equipment input

So I'm going all grain and looking to do a false bottom 10 gallon cooler tun build. I'm not sure if I really want to go through the hassle...

Using cocoa nibs/vanilla beans/etc... during boil

I have used additions with a secondary racking before but I was wondering for experimental sake if anyone has tried brewing with these additions(in the actual boil). I was just thinking that if you could get similar results it would reduce the time needed to make a final product and you would...

Hello, Its been awhile since I posted on here. Busy with life I guess. I am currently an extract/partial grain brewer. I brew mainly kits but next time I brew I'm probably going to put together my own recipe. Anyways I'm not a complete noob but the other day I was wondering if racking to...

    Precise calculation for ABV %????????

Does anyone know how commercial wineries calculate the ABV %. We all know in the home made world we just use a hydrometer to give us an estimate of what the wine could be when dry but I am fairly confident that the government holds commercial wineries to higher standards than just guessing and...

breville juice fountain elite and my new musts

I just got my breville juice fountain elite in the mail today and juiced about 16 gallons of juice with it right off the bat. this thing is a tank, be sure to not use the stupid little pitcher it comes with to catch the juice, I accidently ran too much fruit through it and it overflowed and got...

Apple wine is done and the results are in.

I used jack kellers recipe for apple wine and I must say it is hands down the best white/yellow wine I have ever made. As long as you wip the must twice a day until it is done fermenting and degass the living crap out of it, it comes out fantastic. I backsweetened with apple cider and starter my...

How to start a oversulfited must

So the other day I put 1/4 tsp per gallon of potasium metabisulfite in my must and figured it was ruined. I looked some things up on the internet and found this website http://vinoenology.com/calculators/SO2-addition/ I found out you can use hydrogen peroxide to reduce up to 100ppm of sulfites...

    pot meta question

Lately I have been adding pottasium metabisulphite to my musts prior to fermentation but I was wondering is this really neccesary when using frozen concentrates? I dont think yeast or bacteria could tolerate my deep freezer. What I was going to do was just let the must get down to a pitchable...
