Your Story Behind Choosing Your User Name/Handle?

Mine is self-explanatory. My name is Mark and I’m a grandfather.

My son and DIL have two boys. The oldest turns 20 next week, the youngest is 16. My daughter and SIL also have two boys. The oldest is 4, the youngest 18 months.

I’m pushing 70. If I inherited more of my paternal grandmother’s genes I might be around long enough to see the youngest one become a grandfather. If I inherited more of my maternal grandfather’s genes I might be gone by next Thursday. Life is quite a crapshoot, ain’t it.

I regret, after seeing some really interesting user names, to not have given mine more thought (davidabcd). I only tried to grab a name that wouldn't get rejected. I chose something equally as lame on the UK sister-site: davidfromUS. Embarrassing!

Years ago while trying to pick out an AIM username I was getting frustrated that everything was already taken. On the desk next to me was a small plastic magnifying glass with the logo Novacor Plastics LTD. on the handle.

Novacor was already taken, but after trying a few different numbers after it I had a username that I use for most of my online handles.

My username is something I came up with back when I was a pharmacy tech about 25 years ago. "Sea" for Seattle, and "tazzz" for tasmanian devil; back in the day I moved very fast and left vapor trails according to my coworkers; and was kinda mean to people I didn't know. Brewery name...another pharmacy tech memory. One of the guys I worked with named me Speedbump, because apparently I needed one.

I used to sell fire hose and one of my biggest accounts was a company called Firerat.

I babysat the account and was know as firerat in my office. Not my choice but what can you do.

Then I signed up to another forum for one my other hobbies and used firerat as it seemed a bit unique.

It's been my online moniker for a bit over a decade now here and various other forums.

Way, way back when I worked in apartments I knocked on doors. Several a day. I got this technique down where I would fling the door knocker up in one swoop and it would knock three times. My coworker was trying to tell my boss about this and couldn't paint he verbal picture he had hoped so he radioed me to tell me I had to show my boss my floppy knocker. It kinda stuck. So there you go - not what you imagined, huh?

This thread comes up every few years and I always appreciate it. These unique names start to make sense and give some personality to the users behind them. I also enjoy the personal stories. If interested look back for other versions of this thread for more. Maybe a mod could combine them all. Anyways great idea.

My degree is in jazz guitar playing. At the time I was into jazz and wanted something jazzy. Well bird, birdland etc...after my favorite musician charlie parker were all taken. I was playing scrapple from the apple, a bird tune and applescrap was born. Iiac scrapple from the apple is sausage without a casing. My cousin was the first to point out that it reads two ways. Thats why I dont fret everytime someone points that out. They just have my cousins sense of humor. Its not mine, but I get it. Now if only I worked harder I could play the song.

mine is a mix of nick names. I got stuck with he name Red while I was in the service, red hair. After i got out of the service i moved in with my wife (GF at the time) and i can't remember why i needed a user name for, but my normal ones were not working out to well... i.e. first name initial and last name. I used to always refer to dad as pappy when i talked about him to her. Since we just recently had a child ourselves, she came up with Redpappy... I have pretty much used it ever since.
My avatar is simple to explain. New age camping is my favorite past time, and of course, the fires to go with.

I didn't really choose it at all.

Robert is, in fact, my first name, though I go by Rob.

Once upon a time, registering on another site, I had all kinds of clever ideas for a handle. But I must have inadvertently clicked on something while entering basic information, and got stuck with Robert as a user name. Well, I figured, I won't forget that at least, so since then I've tried to make it my first choice when registering anywhere. Usually I have to complicate it a bit to get a name not already taken, and 65 (my birth year) is the obvious first choice for an equally memorable extension.

But all is not lost!

Those of us who have such dull handles can still have fun with our avatars and titles. My chosen title [Major Obvious (recently promoted)] goes back to a couple of childhood friends who long ago conferred the title of Captain Obvious on me. They were, I'll grant, probably justified.
