Hey guys, I've never used a liquid yeast before and didn't realize that the bottle was carbonated and it said shake before pitching so I sook up the vial and opened it, it obviously leaked and exploded out, there was a fair amount left, I would say 2/3, and I went ahead and pitched it. I'm worried about the amount left, and obviously contamination. Think the batch will be okay?

They need to put a warning label on the white labs yeast. I wonder how many newbs have done that.

OP, make sure you shook/ shake the primary really good to aerate.
 
After my first such event, I've learned to shake up ahead of time to mix well, then I let it sit for a while as my starter wort cools. CO2 must go back in solution, because no spurting at all when later cracking it open.
 
I do it all the time and I've been brewing for 5 years. You're fine. I always advise making a starter though
 
Yep I too took a face full of yeast slurry once... I know somewhere on White Labs website, it says to crack the seal once you take it out of the fridge and then periodically vent the bottle so it doesn't gush out on you.

To the OP, I wouldn't worry too much. The yeast will do their thing.

Yeah, I did. I put the rubber stopper on and shook it up with my thumb over it, then removed my thumb and let the air in. Repeated for a few minutes.
 
Hey guys, i'm bumping this because it was Saturday night when I originally posted this. I still have no action in the carboy. Still as can be - what should I do ? Should I pitch more yeast?

Do you have any krausen? IMO that's too long without any signs of fermentation. Do you remember how old the yeast was? If you're fermenting in a ale pale, sometimes they don't seal so good and it's fermenting, but you don't know it is.

There seems to be a little bit of what I think is Krausen, and it's an Oatmeal Stout. The yeast was less than a week old from the store at least. The carboy has been sitting around 67 degrees.
 
If you want to be sure, get some fresh yeast. If none on hand or easily accessible, I would aerate/stir/shake again. You under pitched and lots of growth is needed. But if nothing within 12hrs after that, get some fresh yeast.

I talked to my home brew store and they gave me a packet of nottingham to throw in there to help my other yeast get started since it's probably under pitched - is this a good idea?

Won't hurt if you do. Since you have some signs of activity, maybe give it another day. I've almost overreacted twice now just to realize that I didn't wait quite long enough.


For the White Labs vials. Yup, we've all done it. What I do is take the vial out of the fridge when I start my brew process. By the time I get to the point where I need to pitch, it's just about room temp. Instead of shaking (because it's basically just like a carbonated soda/beer), I just roll the vial around in various ways until the slurry is well mixed and nothing is clinging to the walls.

When you crack it open, it should behave at that point very similarly to opening a Pepsi. :ban:
 
Oh, also, I opened this thread because of the title. I was really kinda hoping for a tragic tale of cleaning up a big mess. :cross:

But I'm glad no people/beer were hurt in your mini-splosion!!:mug:

Speak for yourself.;) I used Wyeast before trying White Labs and I had read about the spewing vials so I was forewarned and haven't done it myself.

I was surprised at how hard it was to vent the pressure without spewing out the yeast though.
