Hi all:
Am new to this and got an extract kit that calls for 2 lbs or DME at the begining of the boil and 6 lbs of LME to be added in the last 15 min. of the boil. My question is why the addtion of malt so late in the boil?
Also, can DME & LME be added at the same time?

Thanks for the replies,

You can add them all at the beginning of the boil. But doing the late additions helps with hop utilization and extract darkens the beer the longer it is boiled

Late additions of LME is do to it already being concentrated the boil is to remove water and enrich flavors. If you add it to soon you will burn the sugars
Its Just how I see things
Hope it helps
Cheers

Using DME in the boil & adding LME near the end or better yet,at flame out will lighten colors & give cleaner flavors.
