Which vittles vault do you use for 50lb of grain - uncrushed? Seems simple to just go with the size based on the pound rating but since it's for dog food which is much bigger than grain and contains more space between the kibble, I wonder if you can get away with a smaller size?

50 lb is 50 lb no matter what size the grain or dog food is.

50 lb is 50 lb no matter what size the grain or dog food is.

I'm not a scientist but the dog food I buy has pretty large size kibble - like nickel size...there's a lot of airspace between them. If you read the reviews on chewy.com some people state that their 30lb dog food didn't fit in the 40lb container. I mean a 30lb lead weight is not the same size as 30lbs of packing peanuts.

If you drill down on that site you list, and click the "Details and Dimensions" link, it'll tell you the gallons capacity of each unit.

I use 5-gallon buckets w/ Gamma Seal lids (same lids as the vittle vaults). It takes me two of those 5-gallon buckets to store 50# of grain.

So, it's a gallon per 5#.

The only issue to be aware of is that with the slanted/tilted mouth on the vittle vault, you won't be able to fill them completely or the grain will spill out.

This one would appear to be able to hold a full 50 or 55 pounds:

Cool your jets guys. I was merely commenting on dog food and malt since this is what the initial post was about. Not THAT much difference between those two items.

So based on this your using 10 gallons of storage container for 50lbs of grain. So in theory I could get away with a 10, let’s say 20 gallon size vittles vault for uncrushed grain.

I just got my 60 lb vaults and 55 lb sack of Marris Otter fit in nicely. I doubt you could get away with a 20 lb container for 50 lbs of grain. The 60’s I got were only $25....well worth it.

Really? Was that a typo? The five gallon bucket will hold 27.5lbs? My Vittles Vault 10 gallon buckets can't even hold that much....

EDIT: I just realized you were probably referring to your five gallon buckets from Home Depot with the gamma seal lids. Wouldn't you end up paying more when compared to the Vittles Vault 60lb sales price of $26.63.

I have not experienced that issue. I use several Vittles Vaults 60lb containers and never had any problem filling them up or grain spilling out. If it is difficult to fill through the slanted mouth, simply tilt the vault onto its backside and fill. Then when you return it to the correct angled position, there will be a nice slope of grain and it will not spill out.

BTW, that's a great sales price of $26.63 on the Vittles Vault 60lb! I'm going to buy three more!

No, it's not a typo. I can get a 50# bag of grain into two 5-gallon buckets. Sadly, I can't get a 25kg (55#) bag to fit in two buckets.

I get my buckets for $3.99 each ($3 on sale right now, wish I needed more :) ). The gamma seal lids not on sale are $6.97 each. So, not on sale, it's $10.96 plus tax or $11.56 per 5 gallons. Or $23.12 equivalent to a 10-gallon size where the Vittle Vault is $26.63. But the vittle vaults are bigger, so maybe you can get more bang for the buck.

On sale the bucket/lid combo is $9.69.

In the end it depends on what form factor works best. The prices are close enough that IMO price shouldn't be the determinant of which is better.

From what I read the 60 lb size will hold 55 lb of grain.

From personal experience, yes, the 60lb Vittles Vault easily holds 55lbs. For me, the nice thing with Vittles Vaults is that I can easily stack them and have access to them when needed. No need to unstack the 60lbs vault to access the grain as might be the case with the five gallon buckets, PLUS there is no lifting. Just unscrew the lid and scoop out...

I use 5 gallon buckets with the gamma seal lids too. I'm jealous. Not only can I not fit 55# in two buckets, I usually can't quite squeeze 50# in two. Not comfortably screwing down the lids. Maybe depends on the particular malt and its packing efficiency. So I divide between 3 and have room left to keep a scoop in the bucket. With my usual suspects I rotate stock, buying a new sack and filling all buckets as soon as there's a sack worth of open space, the last of the old batch going on top of the first bucket of new, so I'm never really just filling a couple of pounds into an empty bucket. I like the stackability and flexibility of buckets instead of vaults. But that's just me.
