Today we have the battle of the Maibocks! So why the heck are we tasting Bock beers designed to be released in the month of May in Oktober? Just shows the wide difference in Bavarian interpretations of the same thing. With a SRM range of 6-11, there can be quite a bit of variation in this tasty brew.
Hofbräuhaus Maibock – Advertised as Munich’s first Maibock – Brewed according to the Reinheitsgebot, it’s 1516 compliant. SRM color is darker than Ayinger’s. ABV is there by the bucketful, coming in at a hefty 7.2%. These are BIG beers! Really reminds me of a lot of the Oktoberfest’s I’ve been drinking, there isn’t a huge difference here. Definitely a touch more boozy, this is a delicious malt-forward brew.
Ayinger Maibock – Malty and delicious, and a touch more spicy than the Hofbräuhaus version, Ayinger knows how to please! Another Reinheitsgebot big Beer, Ayinger releases this at a hefty 7% ABV. Although both are Maibocks, this one doesn’t seem quite as boozy, it seems to mask the ABV with the spicier hop profile. Still a malt–forward beer, this one seems more like a bigger, heavier heavy Helles to me. Not so much like an Oktoberfest.
Both of these are Spring beers designed for release in May for Springtime festivities. Because of the extensive temperature-controlled Beermeister32 lagering Bierhorde, we have the chance to extend that season out a few months - and enjoy these here in Oktober, up against other seasonal Oktoberfest brews from around the world! I think you’d enjoy either one of these. Just shows the range of what’s possible with this style.

Visiting Hop & Sting in Grapevine, TX today. Really good brewery and a must stop for anyone visiting the DFW area and likes beer, wine, and hoity-toity food places.
Done with today's yardwork, time for a Doppelbock.
A southern tier creme brulee, wonder beer while smoking beef ribs.

Check out the What I did for Beer Today thread. Mr. ClaudiusB is rocking the Lawrence Livermore National Labratory of home breweries. Some of us brew on gas, others on electricty. Claudius brews with a particle accelerator.
