Home again, well nearly. Porter and a burger that’s coming, while we wait out the pumpkin pickers that swarm the east end of LI every weekend until Halloween.

(day before yesterday)
I opened my first Grape Ale, it was definitely not what I was expecting (although I had never tried a grape ale).
I think I had my first disappointment, it's drinkable but it wasn't at all what I expected... i can feel the acidity of the grapes but it seems a bit watered down, and i can't notice any of the aromas of the Moscatel (the grapes I used). Anyway, I'll wait and see if it improves with time and I'll see if the other two grape ales I have just finished fermenting are better than this one.

Any time I get to try a new brew, I get genuinely excited! Having three beer-loving daughters also keeps old Beermeister32 tuned up a bit in the world of new brews and trends. So when Daughter #1 told me about the new 805 Zero being released, I really got excited! Truth is, I drink a lot of diet beer as well as the yummy good regular brews. Trying to drop a few pounds this year, hence the diet beer.

Said beer-loving Daughter #1, “I love Firestone Walker.” As a graduate of nearby UC Santa Barbara, she should know! They drink more Firestone-Walker there than Festbier in Munich!

OK, Ok, Maybe Munich has them beat. Anyway, how does this taste? WELL….. You know, I like Firestone Walker. Their regular 805 and Union Jack are both perfection. Not so much with this turkey. This one is a Bubble Gum Bomb, very estery and not in a good way. I’m not sure if this was brewed as an ale or a lager, my hunch is it started life as an ale, they seem more touchy when brewing light versions. Me Dunno. What I DO KNOW, is that I only have to suffer through 5 more cans of this. Guys, what is going on here?

Back from Vaca. Made an interesting stop halfway home. I've had a couple of Barrelled Souls ipas but never had any of their highly rumored stouts or barley wines. Got their an hour before closing. Check the non beer list. Needless to say they like their barrels. They had a big 20+ bottle release Oaktoberfest a day after I was there :(

Welp, the last hoorah after the BD weekend. We made a peanut butter pie to die for. 540cal per 16th/slice. Cheeseburger/cheesecake/cupcakes/potatoes....so much for keto. Pretty sure I'm starting over after loosing 10lbs. But it was a great weekend.

Down the hatch these go...

Go Gauchos!

Here's the UK IPA that I put on line a couple days ago. With the carbonation substantially lowered it's starting to come into focus. It could still use a bit less gas, but it's going to be nice. This is the third ale I've made with Jasper's version of the Fullers strain and it's becoming progressively drier as it adapts to my system. This is the best UK IPA strain that I'm aware of, it's what I always hoped Thames Valley would be.

And here it is with a splash of dark mild. I’ve made worse best bitters than this.

When I bought this thrift store glass I had never heard of the brewery so I was tickled to find this unfiltered rotbier at Hop City. Roasted bready malt, a little caramel, subtle sweet fruitiness, medium body, 5.2%. A couple of months past BBD but a very tasty brew.

That's a really pretty glass! Congrats on finding the beer to put in it!

Karl Strauss is one of my favorite San Diego brewers. They also have some mighty fines eats as well at their brewhouse restaurants. I’ve picked up a few growlers on the way out the door, they have a couple sours and darks that are to die for!

Seasonal brews being what they are, I have to rely on my memory and notes, as any brew made once a year is going to have some differences. The 2024 Karl Strauss Oktoberfest (hey they spelled it right!) is a terrific beer. A lot of the domestic Oktoberfest beers I’m finding to be a touch on the sweet malty side, and this one is that too, but not overpowering. I’m noticing a slight drift in domestic Oktoberfest Märzen production more towards the sweet side, rather than the slightly more balanced, chuggable German versions. Not as chuggable as the Festbiers though, but that’s a different story! A great beer, nonetheless. Hey, was this brewed in March?

Vienna and Munich malts and Perle hops from the Hallertau region make up this beer. At 5% ABV, this is a perfect and malty, delicious brew. Just a touch on the sweet side this year, I remember this finishing a bit drier in the previous year’s batches. Prost!
