Another from deep in the cellar. 15 years ago

Stone Old Guardian Barleywine 2010. A little sweet from the hops dropping out, but still some bitterness in there. Past it’s prime but still really nice

Working on a freshly kegged English Brown ale with Fuggles and EKG, poured on a new NukaTap faucet with flow control. (I was having some issues on Tap #2 - which I believe was mostly due to a faulty gauge, not the faucet). But wanted to try a flow control faucet so I got one, swapped out the blinky gauge and it is pouring like a pretty princess. That is good. Ha.

Warsteiner makes a great Pilsner. There, I said it! The only thing sad is these two cans don’t quite fit my 28 ounce glass! OK, they WOULD fit if we were talking low-head brews, but who wants them! I say fill it until it won’t fill any more, and then fill it again!

This really is a terrific Pils. Warsteiner just doesn’t ship a lot of this to the US. I’ve seen a few of the combo boxes showing up, so maybe the shipping situation is improving. You know I was getting kind of used to all the West Coast and US Pilsners that were available, I’m really remiss in not finishing strong with some of these German brews! Check out the clarity and lacing…. SUPERB!

Warsteiner “Pilsener” (Northern German spelling variation) is a great tasting, 4.8% ABV German Pils. Looking at the can though, I see something I don’t see much of in German brews…. Hop extract! Well, it also says “Naturally Brewed According the German Purity Law”, so it must be Ok then. Hey, does that mean they were brewing with “Hop Extract” back in 1516? Now I’m REALLY impressed!

Great brew, get it when you can find it… Prost!

Quick, somebody tell me what a Dutch-style Pilsener is. Peter’s Brand has been here before, it is a “Dutch” Pilsner by Union Export Brewery in Holland, but is produced for them by Hohbrauhaus Wolters out of Braunschweig, Germany.

Well, if I was blind folded, this brew would have me thinking more along the lines of a Kolsch or even a Helles. It has slightly more fruitiness than I’m used to in a Pilsener, er Pilsner. There it is again, that Northern German spelling. Pils already! It also seems to have a touch of something else. If I was home brewing this, I’d say a touch of Cara Munich in it, or maybe a higher mashing temperature. Something is giving it a slightly maltier profile, most of the Pilsners I’ve been drinking lately are definitely hop-forward and drier beers. This one less so.

I really can’t cluster this beer in with the other Pilsners I’ve been drinking. It’s just a different beer, maltier, less head, less lacing, more mellow, possibly even like a few of the Czech versions from a couple months ago. Dutch like the Czechs? Let me re-think that! …. Prost!
